5G connection works in Lithuania for more than a week: NVSC answers the health questions of the population

Expectations are high

5G connectivity (also known as 5G technology) is a mobile connection with extremely high bandwidth, low latency, and a wide range of applications. In Lithuania, the 5G connection is currently being tested. So far, its application possibilities are limited due to the small offering of remote control technologies for equipment and processes, NVSC writes in a press release.

In the future, a lot is especially expected from the development of 5G connectivity and remote personal healthcare. It is anticipated that 5G will allow patients to visually communicate remotely with doctors, doctors will monitor patients’ vital signs, quickly adjust treatment, and even perform some interventions. A small delay of 5G will ensure timely diagnosis, initiation and adjustment of remote treatment.

5G is a continuation of mobile development, especially 4G. In the future, a 5G connection will work in a higher frequency band than a normal 4G connection. Low coverage wireless access points and base stations (up to 10W) are planned.

Radiation levels should not increase significantly

Mobile base stations emit a radio frequency electromagnetic field (EMF). The public is concerned that the development of a network of such devices could have negative effects on health due to the high frequency of the EMF waves they emit and the power of the devices.

“It just came to our knowledge then. However, it must be emphasized that according to mobile development experts, the introduction of 5G technology is not expected to increase significantly due to the introduction of 5G technology and will be only a small part of the EMF intensity parameters allowed in the residential area, but only after EMF measurements. Research has shown that electromagnetic fields (also called microwaves) in the GHz frequency band do not penetrate the deeper layers of the body They only affect the surface of the body, that is, the skin, ”says Irena Taraškevičienė, Head of the Public Health Safety Division of the National Center for Public Health.

According to experts, EML has so far been studied in detail and has been shown to cause thermal effects in humans, that is, the temperature of tissues or organs increases. Based on this effect, EMF intensity limits have been established below which thermal effects that could cause damage to tissues or organs are avoided. Currently, the energy flux density of the electromagnetic field in the Lithuanian residential environment in the radio frequency range of 2 GHz to 300 GHz cannot exceed 10 W / m2.

The scientific community is also investigating other possible effects of the electromagnetic field (appearance of oncological diseases, adverse effects on sleep, fertility, genotoxicity, etc.). However, according to the World Health Organization, it has not yet been established that electromagnetic fields below allowable levels have long-term effects and can cause these health problems. The scientific debate on non-thermal effects is ongoing and much attention is being paid to research on the health effects of mobile phones. Once the non-thermal effects have been scientifically confirmed, the EMF limits will need to be reviewed.

Strictly supervised activities

In Lithuania, the maintenance of radio equipment emitting EMF is regulated. NVSC controls these facilities, coordinates the radio projects and the electromagnetic radiation monitoring plans. Additionally, radio facility operators are required to periodically perform EMF measurements and the results are published on the NVSC website. This established procedure will also apply to 5G communication devices.

NVSC specialists remind us that to reduce the impact of the electromagnetic field on our health, we must use mobile phones responsibly. “These devices are the closest to our body and their effects on health are still being studied. It is recommended to try to keep the phone as far away from the body as possible, to limit the use time, especially for children. Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that the virtual reality available through mobile communication can negatively affect the psycho-emotional state of children, its long-term presence promotes a physically passive lifestyle and impairs vision ”, warns I. Taraškevičienė.

According to the data available to the NVSC, a total of 7 technical radio installations using 5G communication have currently been installed in Lithuania.
