“I believe that Lithuania does not need radical changes today, it needs certain fortifications and clear messages so that the transatlantic community knows that Lithuania is and always has been a reliable partner of the United States and always will be, no matter which administration is elected or which governs the US government. ” A Conservative member spoke.

Mr. Landsbergis emphasized that many of Lithuania’s strategic foreign policies were established by consensus, regardless of the party leading the Government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

G. Landsbergis: “I think I have diplomatic experience”

Those who served as foreign ministers had great diplomatic experience. Landsberg said he did too.

“I think I have diplomatic experience. I am glad I came to politics from the diplomatic service, where I worked for almost 10 years, I will not say exactly. The system and the people are familiar to me and many of them are close to me.

Experience in the European Parliament and participation in the activities of the European People’s Party, the European Conservative Party, is almost the most important thing to me. Having the opportunity to work together with the Prime Ministers or Foreign Ministers of other countries, with whom we have sat, jokingly, on the same bench as the EP, is a great advantage and a great opportunity. I think everything will be fine, “said G. Landsbergis.

Linkevičius held up a tall sign

According to G. Landsbergis, Linas Linkevičius, who has been the Minister of Foreign Affairs for many years, has raised a tall poster.

“The presence of Minister Linkevičius in office for 8 years shows that he is compatible with different authorities, certain directions have been chosen. I think I should continue.

Minister Linkevičius held up a tall sign; now it is a big task to maintain it, to improve it as much as possible.

I have repeatedly mentioned that the EU has many challenges and it happens very often that Lithuania sees those or parts of those that are related to our country, but if we see a larger picture of what is happening in the Mediterranean or in North Africa and we participated in decision-making there, “It could be easier for the EU to get involved in the problems that are in our neighborhood, I mean Belarus, Russia, Astrava and other problems,” Landsberg said.

One of the priorities is to help the Belarusian opposition

He mentioned helping the Belarusian opposition as one of his priorities and first jobs.

“This is probably one of the biggest challenges facing Lithuania. Lithuania has shown leadership, Minister Linas Linkevičius has raised the bar for assistance to Belarus, but I really believe that we can stop and do more to mobilize support within and outside the Union. European Parliament for the Belarusian opposition, which is currently taking refuge in Lithuania. Aliaksandr Lukashenko’s regime would not last long, “said the candidate for ministers.

He also said that it was necessary to strengthen relations with Germany, calling the country the heart of the European Union.

Landsbergis rejected outgoing Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis’s fears that the right could ruin good relations with neighboring Poland and Latvia.

“I realize that the head of the interim government and the ministers are trying a bit to change the opposition regime and paint in dark colors. The homeland union has a long experience in the field of foreign policy, there should be no changes radicals who should fear Prime Minister Skvernelis or the people of Lithuania, “said the Conservative leader.

Landsbergis to resign if appointed minister

If appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, G. Landsbergis will resign from the post of Chairman of the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Group-National Union in the Seimas.

The party leader does not reveal who could replace him in this position.

“Our party is a community, it is not a single man or a group of people gathered around one person. The community means that there are governance structures, we have many strong people with management experience, whom I can confidently leave a faction for the day-to-day work of the Seimas, ”G. Landsbergis told BNS.

Šimonytė: Landsbergis is the chairman of the family of the European People’s Party, one of the parties

When asked why the candidacy of G. Landsbergis was proposed, although for many years there were candidates with great diplomatic experience, I. Šimonytė commented in the presidency that there were all kinds of experiences.

“My proposal for such a solution really has good reason. We actually have a lot of people in our community who could run for the office of chancellor.

But for that, there is a period of formation of governments and committees so that people’s abilities are exploited where they can best be exploited.

G. Landsbergis is the chairman of the family of the European People’s Party, one of the parties, I think this is a very important factor that could further enrich our foreign policy with the ties we have through the family of the party to which we belong, “said I. Šimonytė.

The president will meet with the candidates shortly

According to the Constitution, the President, with the approval of the Seimas, appoints the Prime Minister and instructs him to form the Government and approve its composition.

“We have discussed the candidacies that I would like to present to the president if I were ordered to form a government. {…} Will those surnames be given with certainty? Then we will know only when the president instructs me to form a government,” I. Šimonytė said after of the meeting with the president.
