Head of the Endocrinology Center of Clínicas Santara Doctors endocrinologist doc. According to Žydrūnė Visockienė, diabetics are often polygraphic and have several unfavorable factors that worsen output.
Many people with COVID-19 are diabetic
“Diabetic patients are at increased risk of contracting COVID-19 virus infection and they also have severe forms of the disease.
If you look at what the current meta-analyzes are, the proportion of people with diabetes is between 8% and 58%. in all COVID-19 infected patients. Of course, it depends a lot on the group of patients studied in which country, but these are really big numbers, ”he said during a remote interview organized by the Santara clinics.
The doctor also noticed other sad numbers. According to her, the available data suggests that a significantly higher proportion of people with diabetes will have a more severe form of the disease.
“Here the numbers vary again, but by as much as 30 percent. Patients with diabetes develop severe pneumonia and this again increases the risk of mortality in these patients.
If we look at the patients who had COVID-19 infection and whose illness ended in death, it was again up to 30 percent of those with diabetes ”, Ž. Visockienė.
A bunch of adverse factors
The doctor noted that similar figures are given when it comes to cardiovascular disease.
“And because diabetes is often referred to as polyglot, we have a host of adverse factors that worsen the outcome for these patients.
So the message for our patients is the same: protect yourself as your doctors recommend, ”urged the endocrinologist.
He also reminded that glucose control should be as good as possible during this period, as any poor glycemic index increases the risk of a poor result.
The incidence grows every year
Doctors emphasize that diagnosing diabetes is not complicated, but for many people, it is diagnosed too late.
“Diabetes is one of those chronic diseases whose incidence in the general population around the world is increasing every year. We have the same growth of diabetes in Lithuania as in other countries, both for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, ”said Ž. Visockienė.
There are currently more than 120 thousand people in Lithuania. people with diabetes. So, according to the doctor, this is quite a common disease.
He stressed that diabetes is not usually a disease in itself.
“Very often patients also suffer from other diseases: cardiovascular, arterial hypertension, as I mentioned, our patients are polygraphic. That is why they need to be diagnosed, treated and well controlled as soon as possible, otherwise we will have complications from diabetes”, he warned the head of the Endocrinology Center.
Alarming symptoms
The doctor also recalled the signs of the disease, which should lead to a medical consultation as soon as possible.
“Symptoms of the disease vary depending on the type of disease, whether it is recurrent type 1 diabetes or type 2. Most patients have type 2 diabetes, which is a disease that is often diagnosed late,” Ž. Visockienė.
As she said, signs like increased fatigue, increased thirst, more frequent urination, some weight changes should already cause you anxiety.
This is also worth doing if there are people with diabetes in the family. People with overweight, obesity, high blood pressure or other cardiovascular diseases should also be careful.
“That would be a sign that you need to control your blood glucose,” he said.
At the same time, the doctor added that in the case of type 1 diabetes, the symptoms would be more pronounced and progress more quickly.
“It is not uncommon for these patients to enter the admissions department when decompensated diabetes is first diagnosed,” he warned.
November 14 is World Diabetes Day.
