Beijing did so nearly a week after the Democrat was declared the winner of the election.
“We respect the decisions of the American people. Congratulations to Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris, “said Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, at a press conference.
Kamala Harris will be the first woman to hold the position of Vice President of the United States.
China used to be one of the few countries that has yet to congratulate Biden on his electoral victory. Russia and Mexico are still on this list. Earlier this week, Beijing simply announced “upon realizing that Biden had declared himself the winner.”
China on Monday refused to congratulate Biden on his victory in the US presidential election, and Beijing officials said the election results were not yet final.
While current US President Dump has yet to admit defeat in the election, many world leaders have already congratulated Biden and Vice President Kamal Harris on the victory.
“In our opinion, the outcome of the elections will be determined by the laws and procedures of the United States,” said Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Despite questions from reporters, he refused to acknowledge Biden’s victory, but said China “looked forward to reaching an agreement with the new US administration.”
Donald Trump, for his part, refuses to acknowledge defeat and congratulates Biden, who won the election, as usual when the result is clear.
Trump’s four years in the White House have been marked by a trade war between the United States and China. Washington and Beijing also fought over the COVID-19 pandemic and China’s human rights abuses in Xinjiang and Hong Kong.
Trump has described China as a major threat to the United States and world democracy for most of his term.
