G. Nausėda offered support to the new Seimas, but cautioned that he would be critical: “We don’t have the luxury of speaking in the future.”

President Gitanas Nausėda, who arrived to congratulate the newly elected Seimas, stated that by voting, the citizens gave the Seimas a credit of confidence, which is a great responsibility.

“Many people hope that this Seimas will set high moral standards for himself, abandon communication based on anger and opposition, go beyond narrow group interests and unanimously pursue the common good. You start working at a difficult time. You, the new Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, together with the future Government, will have the responsibility of managing one of the biggest crises in recent times. “You gathered for the first meeting at a time when the entire country is ablaze in the red of contagion danger, when doctors are anxiously counting the beds left for the seriously ill and companies accumulate losses,” said the president .

According to him, the coronavirus has become a serious test for all areas of public life, from health and education to social security and defense.

“By saving the health of our people, we are today restricting opportunities for society and business to operate freely. For many Lithuanians, this means less income, unemployment and worse physical and mental well-being. Many vulnerable people, who lack access to basic services, feel the lack of care from the state. The virus is here and now. Our doctors, our nurses, our entire health care system today faces the greatest stress. There is a risk of further exclusion. business and economic is at stake. The virus is weakening the state, which means that the threat to its security is growing, “the president said in a speech.

Therefore, according to him, we cannot afford to speak in the future.

“It must be absolutely clear that we must now make decisions that help protect the health of the Lithuanian people and not leave business to fate.” Now is the best time to reduce all forms of exclusion, fight inequality and oppose society. Now we have to take care of the poorest, the disabled, the elderly. Now it is necessary to guarantee high quality and equally accessible public services ”, said the Head of State.

Given the challenges we face, according to G. Nausėda, there is simply no more word “later”.

“Social exclusion will not disappear by itself, like a nightmare. For a long time in our country, she was honored with words out loud, but ignored, as soon as it was time to make difficult decisions. For too long, we have been guided by the hope that an emerging economy will lead everyone to a decent life. That has not happened and without our determined efforts it will not happen in the near future. Perhaps this is most clearly illustrated by the situation of education, which has gone from being an engine of social mobility to a tool for perpetuating inequality. “It is not just children who live in poverty, those who view books less frequently or those who suffer from it, we all suffer because of that,” he said.

Yes, according to the president, it should not be: “Such a situation should hurt the sense of justice of each one of us. The future of the country is not in the hands of the elect, but in the hands of all. After all, the lower the social exclusion, the more united the society, the more mature the democracy and the stronger the state. We must follow this path if we want to create a common good for all the people of Lithuania. I invite you to fight for Lithuania to be a strong, fair, ecological and innovative state. A state that trusts itself because its citizens trust each other. A state that not only cares about today, but also invests in the future, ensuring the sustainable development of the green economy. A country where hard work and stubbornness allow a person to make their dreams come true ”.

According to the president, we will receive change by learning to seek consensus even when it seems difficult to achieve, when old disputes and the desire for new political victories hinder it.

According to him, there will be no greater public trust in the Seimas without a higher level of political culture. I am convinced of that.

“Today I present myself before you, members of the new Seimas, and I offer my support. I am willing not only to speak, but also to listen, not only to demand, but also to recognize the weight of the other party’s arguments” promised the president.

“Of course, as I have done so far, I will critically evaluate all new laws and, if necessary, make constructive proposals. I also hope you will take the legislative process seriously. We cannot afford to get involved in hasty legislation and of poor quality. It is necessary to act quickly, but with prudence, we all need it. I wish you the greatest patience, a rational look and successful elections. Justify the confidence that has been shown to you! “, were the words of the president.
