Povilas Poderskis, Director of the Vilnius Municipal Administration, who organized a short press conference on this topic, spoke about the plans and possibilities to adapt the facilities of the Lithuanian Exhibition and Congress Center Litexpo. However, the director also highlighted other issues.

Antakalnis hospital is not yet crowded

According to P. Poderskis, the main concern of the Vilnius municipality is the hospital on Antakalnio str. 124, where there are 116 beds for COVID-19 patients. “There are already 88 patients, they are admitted, discharged every day, we speak with the Santara clinics. We plan to launch the second building soon on Antakalnio str. 124, we will be able to accommodate a total of 188 patients. We are still ready to book another branch Antakalnio str. 57 about 50 places, if there is such a need, and it is growing ”, said the director of the administration.

He also noted that the amount of help received from hospitals in the region is small, so treatment at the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital (VMKL) is practically the same as at the Santara Clinic.

“During the summer a lot of preparations were made in the LSMU and Santara hospitals, unfortunately that money did not reach VMKL and now all the infrastructure improvements are being done at the expense of the municipality. We also provide doctors with equipment, tools and other things they need for work and leisure, for which no money is allocated.

The salaries of the doctors have been delayed since July and were paid with the accounts of the institutions and only paid with the Health Insurance Funds in October, ”said P. Poderskis.

Used part of the polyclinic

If the pandemic continues to unfold in this way, more infrastructure forces will be needed. “We are currently considering the possibility of installing about 100 beds in the VMKL polyclinic building, because if the number of diseases increases, it will make sense, because we will be able to do it without large investments, in the rehabilitation corps, etc.”, said Poderskis.

According to him, they are also working with Litexpo on the lease of three pavilions. A temporary hospital could be installed there in six weeks: an oxygen supply system, the purchase and delivery of beds, and the organization of staff. Public procurement has already started. However, more pronounced changes will be seen when those facilities are really needed, but the focus is primarily on inpatient hospitals.

According to P. Poderski, Litexpo is suitable due to its location, the venue itself and the financial difficulties of the center.

Doctors take inability to work

Exercises were organized in Vilnius on how to care for medical personnel in the city, after which it became clear that about 70 percent. doctors who would need a temporary hospital to find out would not be difficult.

“There are differences of opinion among physicians on whether family physicians could treat COVID-19 patients. We believe so, and many physicians facing real treatment believe it is, but there are some statements that It shouldn’t be their job, ”said P. Poderskis.

Opinions differ among doctors as to whether GPs could treat COVID-19 patients. We think so.

He highlighted the problem that when a hospital begins to treat patients with COVID-19, there is a significant increase in incapacity for work: “This is a problem and we are seeing it.”

However, at least for the moment, even if the number of illnesses increases further, Vilnius could recover, the infrastructure would be sufficient, it would be expanded mainly in inpatient hospitals, where more specialists could be used, patients could be resuscitated if it were necessary

He also mentioned the problem of nursing patients, who cannot be discharged quickly, so patients infected with COVID-19 take hospital beds for three weeks, although this is not always necessary. Solutions are being sought where these patients can recover, where the COVID-19 nursing hospital will be.

“Initially, it was thought of M. Marcinkevičius Hospital, Širvintos Hospital was asked for help, but she refused. We thought of Švenčionys and Molėtai, but there is still no solution: an outbreak in Švenčionys hospital, they need that hospital now.

We are also addressing the issue of a fever clinic. Its functions are now carried out by all the personal health care institutions that have installed fever rooms and provide services there. We counted and thought of a place where we could refer all those patients. Maybe it could be the Litexpo itself, where the process could be organized without problems, but it would be a little more expensive, “said Podersky.

There are about 160 patients in hospitals in the Vilnius region.

As of Wednesday morning, 130 patients with COVID-19 are being treated at the Santara clinics, including 16 in the Resuscitation and Intensive Care Unit. Of 130 patients with COVID-19: 4 children. 129 patients are treated in support hospitals: 89 patients in the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital, 3 of them in the Resuscitation and Intensive Care Unit, 22 patients in the Alytus V. Kudirka Hospital, 18 patients in the Ukmergė Hospital, 1 of them in the Resuscitation and Intensive Care Unit.

Justinas Bortkevičius, director of Litexpo, told BNS that the temporary hospital could be located in three pavilions of the capital’s exhibition center.

Somewhat earlier P. Podersky 15 minutes He spoke that Litexpo would be suitable for a temporary hospital because of its facilities, which would provide mobility through sliding beds, movements of doctors and flows of patients, equipment, etc. Furthermore, the center is further away from residential areas.

According to P. Poderski, however, the most important problem will not be the location of the bed or the temporary hospital, but the doctors, from where it will be necessary to get enough staff to adequately care for the patients. It is estimated that a hospital with 500 places would need 150 doctors, 250 nurses and the same number of their assistants.
