Donald Trump ally Poland upset over Joe Biden’s win

On Saturday, most countries around the world congratulated Democrat Joe Biden on his election victory, but Polish President Andrzej Duda posted a strangely worded message on Twitter congratulating Biden on his “successful presidential campaign.”

“Pending the nomination of the College of Electors, Poland is committed to maintaining a high-level and high-quality strategic partnership between Poland and the United States for an even stronger alliance,” he added.

Private news television TVN24 pointed out that the United States Electoral College is not nominating but electing the president, and that the results of the electoral vote are finally confirmed by the Senate Majority Leader.

However, the president-elect is the first to be announced by the mainstream media, as happened last Saturday when CNN, NBC, Fox News and The Associated Press reported that Biden had almost certainly won a decisive victory in Pennsylvania and at the same time. it secured the support of more than 270 voters needed for victory in the presidential elections.

Furthermore, Duda did not even mention Biden in his speech when he ratified the agreement between the United States and Poland on closer defense cooperation on Monday, but only hinted at a “very hot moment” in the political life of the United States.

Four years ago, Duda was quick to send his “warmest congratulations” to Trump as soon as his victory in the presidential election was confirmed.

Polish state broadcaster TVP also muted Biden’s victory, calling him a political “part of the US media calls the winner of the presidential election.”

Over the weekend, TVP cited Trump’s words and Russian media reports of possible election fraud.

“TVP is more committed than Fox News,” political scientist Marcin Zaborowski told AFP.

According to him, the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party is “very unhappy to have lost such an influential ally in the international arena.”

“The PiS isolated from the European Union, thanks to Trump, has found comfort and support on the other side of the Atlantic,” Zaborowski said.

Trump’s ties to the Polish ruling party, which came to power in 2015, were particularly close.

In June, a few days before the Polish presidential election, Duda visited Trump during his campaign and received strong support from the American leader.

Duda became the first foreign leader to visit the White House after restrictions on the coronavirus were relaxed.

“Poland will lose its status”

The newly elected president, who knows the political situation in the Central European region well, will undoubtedly be a less favorable partner for Warsaw.

Speaking at a public meeting last month, Biden made some critical comments about the region.

“You see what happened everywhere, from Belarus to Poland and Hungary, and the rise of totalitarian regimes in the world,” he said.

Biden also criticized the homophobic statements of the Polish leaders after several regions declared themselves “without LBGT ideology”.

“LGBTQ + rights are human rights, so” LGBT-free zones have no place in the European Union or anywhere else in the world, “he wrote on Twitter.

“Poland will lose its privileged partner status and this is concerning for both PiS and President Duda,” said former Polish ambassador to the United States Ryszard Schnepf.

However, according to Zaborowski, even though he is critical of Poland, Biden does not intend to damage the strategic relations between the two countries.

“These relations can remain strong, and even stronger,” he said of mutual skepticism about Russia.

“In areas such as politics in the post-Soviet space, Warsaw has more in common with the Biden White House than with Trump,” the political scientist said.
