Ginreta Megelinskienė, Head of the Communicable Disease Management Division of the Vilnius Department of the National Department of the National Department of Public Health (NVSC), answered this question at a press conference on Thursday.
According to the NVSC representative, the latest new cases are related to the outbreaks, and at least until now the spread of the virus in society has not been noticed. According to epidemiologist G. Megelinskienė, the increase in the number of illnesses may occur 14 or 28 days after the “great” flexibilization of services, which took place on May 18.
“If we see that the number of non-outbreak cases is growing enough in 14 days, then it will definitely be wrong and we will have to worry about the spread in society, which we are very afraid of,” said G. Megelinskienė, a public health specialist.
According to the epidemiologist, the number of cases not related to the critical points could increase 14 days after the relaxation of the quarantine of May 18, when the provision of a series of services is allowed. The 14-day period is indicated because it is the average incubation period for the virus, after which, if the person is infected, symptoms of the disease may appear. The jump in cases can occur later, after the second average incubation period, 28 days after relaxation from large “quarantine” conditions.
“Not enough time has passed yet, we have to monitor the situation, hopefully the number of cases will not increase,” says G. Megelinskienė.
The epidemiologist emphasizes that there are quite a few asymptomatic cases in Lithuania, and the population is aware: when they feel the symptoms of a contagious disease, they stay home, go to the Corona hotline in time, and the disease clears up in time.
“In this case, we can certainly be sure that there will be no spread in society.” But whatever the situation, we will see in a period of 14 days or two incubation periods, which are 28 days, “said a representative from NVSC.
To date, as many as 46 new coronavirus cases have been reported this week. According to the available data, most of these cases are related to fireplaces.
“Those cases are related to chimneys and recent rises are related to the chimney in personal health institutions,” said G. Megelinskienė.
Some of the currently “burning” virus outbreaks: Vilnius City Clinical Hospital, Santara Clinic, Kaunas Clinical Hospital. On Thursday, 2 new cases were also reported at the Vilnius Republican University Hospital. These institutions are closely monitored because the spread of the virus in them is dangerous: they get sick, they cannot function and they have to isolate themselves if the cases are asymptomatic, the infection spreads without knowing it; Furthermore, previously hospitalized patients, who are often chronically ill or elderly, fall into the risk group.
Currently, there are also major fireplaces in Vilnius, an apartment building on Pergalės Street. 15, also concerned about V. Grybo st. located in an apartment building.
The foci are controlled, if the cases are diagnosed in time, there are clear people in contact with the infected person, they are isolated.
“Even the 25 people connected to the focus of the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital regret, of course, that people got sick, but on the other hand, the isolation in time assures us a little that these people have not yet spread the infection in society. ” said epidemiologist G. Megelinskienė.
– As long as the cases and foci are located, in the non-focal propagation society, we do not see, it is certainly calmer. But we must point out that the situation is always evaluated according to the maximum incubation periods. “
When asked by G. Megelinskienė whether he agreed with the Minister’s view that the spread in Lithuania is currently only a focal point, G. Megelinskienė replied that he agreed with that view.
“There are very clear links with the fireplaces. Of course, it is exceptional that import cases have been introduced in recent weeks. However, isolation is mandatory for people arriving in the Republic of Lithuania, as well as for drivers arriving until the next trip. If it were fulfilled, the diffusion of import cases would not be possible. Unfortunately, we see that the person really did not meet the isolation requirements, he was reunited with his relatives, now we have a spread as it is, ”said G. Megelisnkienė.
