Scientists and doctors complain: the coronavirus statistics do not match and extra beds will be enough for a week in the Vilnius region

Aušra Bilotienė-Motiejūnienė, Director of Management of the Santara Clinics, said in a discussion held at the Seimas on Thursday that the main difficulty in combating the coronavirus may be the lack of beds or staff.

According to her, there should be a sufficient number of fever clinics in each municipality and the bed fund should be expanded in the Vilnius region.

A.Bilotienė-Motiejūnienė emphasized that it would be appropriate to specifically agree on how many coronavirus beds a region needs.

A spokeswoman for Clinicas Santara did not rule out the possibility that it could happen that the provision of certain services had to be suspended.

“There are people who are in isolation, they are sick … The Center for Infectious Diseases, which employed 40 people before the pandemic, currently has 225 people, from the same resources when we did not provide scheduled services in the first wave, but now we are trying to provide them. ” she said.

According to a representative from the Santara Clinic, the services the clinics are currently able to provide are reviewed daily.

According to her, in the Vilnius region, in case of such a disease, extra beds can be enough for at least a week.

“We have a problem with possible beds, because today we do not have more than 150 beds in the Vilnius region by agreement, which we can gradually expand in other medical institutions. And that means not for a full week if this trend continues, “he said.

Director of the Molėtai Hospital: there are beds, but lack of staff

On Thursday, Vaidotas Grigas, director of the Molėtai Hospital, told members of Seimas that current government actions are overdue and that the situation has gotten out of control the day after the elections.

According to him, doctors as a community are offended by the fact that several thousand fans have been able to rage at basketball games for failing to comply with safety requirements.

“That community will have all these problems solved.” Not only for their own account, but also for the health of their families, “he said.

According to V. Grigo, the doctors applied to various institutions with suggestions a little earlier, but received no response. He is convinced that the most important thing is to leave as many medical institutions as possible, in his words, “clean”, that is, without patients with coronavirus, and this requires a strict separation of flows.

According to him, the biggest problem is not the beds, but who will treat the patients.

“If one or two shifts are out of work, we will face a big problem,” he said.

The head of the hospital is convinced that the amounts of evidence are still insufficient, and also said that information on the amount of protective measures is lacking.

Ph.D. of Mathematics: The numbers don’t match

Vaidotas Zemlys-Balevičius, Doctor of Mathematical Sciences, emphasized that only with precise figures can the effectiveness of epidemic measures be measured and the burden on the health system predicted.

“The data that I was looking at was not provided correctly,” he said at the same time.

According to him, the provision of data over time has led to more data sources, numerical discrepancies.

“Day by day they do not coincide, cases disappear, tests appear, tests disappear, the data is not always updated on weekends, for example, hospitalization data is missing, which has only been published since October. The data from the municipal tests is not published at all, we cannot say what is happening in the municipalities. The essential data for the management of the epidemic are not published, that is, what is happening in hospitals, they have been published and published only together, not from all hospitals, since October, this prevents some analysis,

According to V. Zemlis-Balevičius, during the second wave, the discrepancy in the number of cases became particularly pronounced. Recently, according to him, it has happened that the number of cases was higher than the number of positive tests.

“What is mathematical nonsense. This means that cases are registered earlier ”, he emphasized.

In addition, the doctor of mathematics pointed out that it is possible to work with such data, but that various statistical methods must be used to compensate for all these deficiencies.

“But when you use inaccurate data and various statistical tricks, you lose the opportunity to see the current situation, what is happening today, you have to wait a week to see if something has changed or not,” he stressed.

To make the right decisions, we need to handle the data correctly.

According to current data, it is expected, according to him, that the number of cases per month will increase to 1.8 thousand.

“We need to handle the data correctly to make the right decisions,” he said.

The mathematician emphasized that the data must be open to the public, especially the situation in individual municipalities, which is not the case now.

“I want the next Seimas or someone to organize the data, open it up so our state can make the right decisions, on time, and know what needs to be done next,” he said.

V.Kasiulevičius: it will be necessary to buy vaccines as soon as possible

Vytautas Kasiulevičius, vice dean of the Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine, said it was necessary to know what would happen after the quarantine.

“It will also be a difficult time, we will not be able to eradicate the virus, everyone knows that. Exit strategies will be needed, vaccines will be delivered as soon as possible and there will be competition, ”he said.

Speaking of vaccines, the doctor did not rule out the possibility that American vaccine manufacturers could bypass European pharmaceutical companies.

“We must act as soon as possible and fully justify the investment to bring the vaccine to Lithuania as soon as possible, even without registration, because the registration process sometimes takes time. Because the combination of vaccines will take place and Americans can be the first, “he said.

V. Kasiulevičius said that he wanted to invite the new government to listen to those people who say what they don’t like, to discuss until they find the best solution.

M.Stankūnas: Those who do not know the platinum virus are sick

Mindaugas Stankūnas, a professor in the Department of Health Management at the Faculty of Public Health at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, informed parliamentarians that currently most cases are diagnosed in the European region: and an increase in deaths from the 46 percent. That’s a lot of growth. “

So far around 1.2 million. people in the world died of coronavirus, which, according to M. Stankūnas, is a disease of 12 to 13 people in the world in terms of mortality.

“By the end of the year, it should be 10th in terms of deaths,” he said.

According to him, it is at least gratifying that although the number of diseases is increasing, mortality is much lower than in the spring.

“The number you hear in the media only shows the extent of the epidemic,” he said.

According to M. Stankūnas, an epidemiological study conducted in the summer showed that more people have become ill.

He only regretted that few people participated in the study, but it still showed that many people did not imagine that they were sick and therefore spread the virus successfully.

“Two thirds did not feel any symptoms, they walk among us, they do not imagine that they are sick and they transmit the virus,” he said.
