The cardinal changes that affected the Laisv alley did not escape its accesses either: the reconstruction of S. Daukanto street began this week. The street connecting the student plaza and Karaliaus Mindaugas Avenue will be replaced by worn underground communications, renovated paving, and small architecture. All works are planned to be completed next summer.
Will begin to dismantle the tiles
The pedestrian street that crosses the Laisvės alley and “bounces” off the capital-renovated fountain is now looking at the Soviet-era concrete tiles. They contrast sharply with the new granite pavement in Laisvės Alley, so demolition work is slated to begin next week.
“The renovated S. Daukanto Street will connect Unity Square, unrecognizably changed, with the revitalizing Nemunas Island. These spaces are two peculiar symbols of the growth of the city. Kaunas residents still have a chance to say goodbye to the old tiles, which are gradually disappearing from the Kaunas map and I hope they will soon be in the “red book”, – the mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis smiled.
The preparatory work has begun
The reconstruction of the street will dismantle the old pavement, change the sewer routes and the lighting network. After the completion of the works, passers-by will be delighted with the new granite pavement, the small renovated architecture: bike racks, garbage cans, benches.
“The view of the orderly S. Daukanto street will be very similar to Laisvės Alley. The reform of Kęstučio street will begin in about a month. The results of the integrated management will be very clear next year”, emphasized Aloyzas Pakalniškis, Head of the Department of Management of the City of the Municipality of Kaunas.

There will be pedestrian crossings
The 400-meter-long street will be rebuilt by the Kauno tiltai company, which already started preparatory work this week. Particular attention is paid to trees growing on the construction site – they are surrounded by protective panels.
“The street is quite old, its pavement is in very bad condition: broken tiles, old rainwater collection and sewer routes. This week we will use fences to cover the section from the K. Donelaičio street side to the source. A pedestrian passage will be left in the buildings, ”said Giedrė Samulionytė-Lekavičienė, communication specialist for Kauno tiltai.
Reconstruction of S. Daukanto Street is slated to be completed next summer. A project is currently being prepared to renovate the Plaza de Estudiantes that borders the street, and in the summer the action will be reduced to King Mindaugas Avenue: the sidewalks will be renovated here.
Historical and artistic accent
This October Kaunas will celebrate Sugihara Week. The highlight of this cycle of events should be an exclusive 3-meter-high sculpture on S. Daukanto Street, near the fountain. It is dedicated to the memory of Chijun Sugihara, a just nation in the world that lived in Kaunas and saved the lives of thousands of Jews.
“The increasing flow of lathes represented in the sculpture symbolizes the escape from war, the control of death and the search for freedom and peace. Kaunas contributes to the mission of spreading Sugihara’s values to the world in these turbulent times. ” V. Matijošaitis explained the importance of the sculpture that decorates Kaunas.
