According to the representative of the Municipal Administration Arnoldas Bukelis, the experiment that started in 2018, when the installation of horizontal marks with diamond-shaped symbols in the crosswalks began, paid off. Comparing the years 2016–2017, when such marking did not yet exist, and 2018–2019, after the introduction of additional symbols, 45.9% were recorded in Kaunas. fewer accidents at crosswalks.

ELTA has issued a reminder from the Ministry of Transport and Communications that the diamond symbol chosen by Kaunas for horizontal marking is not regulated by KET. However, according to the authorities of this city, it has been used in other developed countries of the world as a warning symbol for several decades. One of those countries is Japan.

“Statistics and numbers speak for themselves. There is no denying that it is this innovation that has saved the lives of Kaunas residents in a few years, perhaps more than a dozen of them. We know that such a measure is unacceptable to some authorities and seems inappropriate. But I suggest bringing personal ambitions to the country. Every life is precious and we are determined to fight for it, ”said Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

In Kaunas, drivers approaching crosswalks are greeted by two diamond-shaped symbols painted on the road surface. The first marks a distance of 30 meters to the crossing. This corresponds to the braking distance, including the driver’s reaction time, when the car travels at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour. Another closer “diamond” means that there are 15 meters before the crosswalk. These signs are useful not only for transportation drivers, but also for pedestrians, as people can remotely assess whether a car approaching a crossing slows down.

The municipality of Kaunas reports that representatives of other Lithuanian municipalities were already interested in diamond-shaped posters a few years ago. According to Kaunas residents, after the legalization of this sign, other cities in the country could start using it.

“This year, no one has died in a traffic accident on the streets of Kaunas.” Of course, this was influenced by the introduction of quarantine, but we also have no doubts about the benefits of so-called diamonds. If such a decision can contribute to saving people’s lives, we are determined to try to legalize it ”, emphasized Paulius Keras, Deputy Director of the Administration of the Municipality of Kaunas.

According to him, this practice has been tested abroad and has been working successfully for more than a decade. Additional road markings help pedestrians and drivers more closely comply with the requirements of traffic regulations, ensure a more efficient organization of traffic and reduce the number of traffic accidents.
