The amendments to the Inland Waterways Transportation Code were approved by the government on Wednesday. Now they are subject to the Seimas.

“We regulate the time according to which it would be possible to use the ferry not in a fixed queue, but exceptionally,” said Minister of Transport and Communications Jaroslav Narkevičius at the government meeting.

After the adoption of the amendments, the residents of Nida, Preila, Pervalka and Juodkrante and Smiltynė, companies, people who work here, health workers and public order and safety officials will be able to go to work, transport to children to educational institutions and perform official functions.

Priority will also be given to disabled people and the vehicles they drive or transport.

According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the current information system managed by the Lithuanian Highway Administration will be sufficient for the Smiltyn ferry.

Neringa residents have missed the opportunity to skip-the-line across the Curonian Lagoon since June 2019, when the Highway Administration took over the issuance of free permits. The then Minister of Transport and Communications, Rokas Masiulis, claimed that the right to travel for free had been abused because many people obtained these permits illegally.

According to the Highway Administration, it is not responsible for suppressing queues, as this is the responsibility of Smiltyne Ferry.
