Preparing for the worst again: there would be a place for a temporary COVID-19 hospital in Vilnius, but worries about finding doctors

If COVID-19 patients will no longer have beds in Vilnius hospitals: Santara Clinics, Vilnius City Clinical Hospital (VMKL), Vilnius Republican Hospital (RVUL), they will have to be hospitalized in other hospitals in the region and possibly even establish a temporary hospital.

According to Povilas Poderskis, director of the Vilnius municipality administration, the temporary hospital would be established as a branch of VMKL.

The challenge for the Minister is also the infrastructure

Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga said at a press conference on Tuesday that the main decisions regarding the establishment of temporary hospitals should be made by municipalities, in this particular case, the Vilnius City Municipality. You also have the right to choose a suitable place to treat patients.

“For the doctors, it will be an invitation for those who can respond and go to work. But not only doctors will be a challenge, it is natural that not only a temporary hospital will emerge, if there is one, but also those that operate in a hospital. Once infected, doctors are isolated and unable to work anywhere, whether in a hospital or a newly established temporary hospital. But an even bigger challenge along with the doctors will be infrastructure. The same oxygen supply, the pulmonary ventilation systems, is a technically complex solution ”, said the Minister.

According to him, not only LITEXPO, but also the Siemens arena was discussed in Vilnius in the spring, but it was up to the municipality to decide.

But an even bigger challenge along with the doctors will be infrastructure. The same oxygen supply, pulmonary ventilation systems, this is a complicated technical solution, – said A.Veryga.

The most important thing is the doctors

The city rejected Siemens sand during the first quarantine, due to awkward spaces on various floors, densely populated areas, etc. And now it is not only the LITEXPO option that is being considered, says P. Poderskis, emphasizing, equipment, etc., and people: doctors, nurses and other personnel.

“In the spring, several places for temporary hospitals were examined: schools, sports facilities (inflatable stadiums), parking lots and many others. Among them were the Siemens Arena and LITEXPO, objects that seemed to have reached the final, P. Poderskis: Later we spoke with the Riflemen’s Union and other professionals with experience in military medicine and similar processes.

The Siemens Arena has been rejected because of its structure: it is better to have more space on one floor. It should be understood that a lot of mobility in space will be required when sliding beds, moving medical and patient flows, equipment, etc. LITEXPO would also be perfect due to its remote location. The hospital will be equipped with a liquefied oxygen system. You will definitely need a lot of oxygen, which is a particularly explosive substance. This reduces the risk of an incident. “

Another thing that a more isolated location would be more appropriate for, according to Podersky, is that many people die in temporary hospitals, and in a densely populated part of the city it could cause people unpleasant feelings.

The biggest challenge for a temporary hospital remains the doctors: there are not enough. What is already there are almost non-existent to open such a hospital, said P. Podersky.

“Today (Tuesday, – last ed.). We consult with LITEXPO, we will have a larger meeting tomorrow. We still do not know if that place will be there and if a hospital of that type will be necessary.

However, after rejecting all these domestic nuances, the biggest challenge for a temporary hospital remains the doctors – there are definitely not enough yet. What is already there: they are almost non-existent to open a hospital of this type, so we will have to stop other services, use doctors from various fields, if this disease worsens. These are not easy solutions, they never are, because other services are often vital to people, ”said P. Poderskis.

It is estimated that a hospital with 500 places would need about 150 doctors, about 250 nurses and the same number of their assistants.

At the meeting of the Vilnius Health Team, which unites all medical institutions and medical organizations operating in Vilnius, it was decided to submit an application to all personal health care institutions in the region with an invitation to join the temporary staff of filling the hospital as of November 6. Until the 16th of November. This is expected to gather information on available capacities and identify gaps that will need to be filled in training, etc.

Doesn’t have a detailed plan

LITEXPO Director Justinas Bortkevičius confirmed that the municipality is being consulted about the possibility of installing a temporary hospital here, but no specific decisions have been made.

“We are at the same stage as half a year ago, we know that this possibility is being considered, but how it could be in practice, to what extent, when and what would be the participation of LITEXPO, will only be clarified with a detailed plan.

We are communicating with the municipality, the architectural solution of the municipality has been prepared as it could be, but in practice we are only the infrastructure managers and we can only talk about the size of the corridors, ventilation and other accesses ”, said J. Bortkevičius.

He called the current preparations more passive, but preparations are being made: J. Bortkevičius is convinced that there is no other option, the center must contribute in such a situation.

LITEXPO events are not taking place now, planned exhibitions are being moved to virtual space, and live events have been postponed, postponed to a later time.

According to data from November 3, 613 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection, 286 with oxygen masks, and 26 ventilated patients are treated throughout Lithuania. There are 51 patients in the resuscitation rooms.

The Santara clinics treat 120 patients with COVID-19, including 10 in the Resuscitation and Intensive Care Unit. Of the 120 patients with COVID-19, 6 are children. 56 patients with COVID-19 are being treated at the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital, one of them in the Resuscitation Intensive Care Unit.
