Birštonas is mentioned in written sources in the late 14th century and was well known to the Crusaders.
The city was an important administrative territorial unit of the first Lithuanian state, which housed the mansion and the castle of the mansion.
King Casimir spent time at Birštonas mansion, where the Council of Lords met. In 1549, Sigismund Augustus wrote Birštonas to his wife Barbora Radvilaitė.
Later, some trade routes passed through Birštonas, in 1539 the market was privileged.
In the 19th century, the mineral waters of Birštonas began to be used more intensively for treatment and the city began to grow more rapidly.
Birštonas was badly damaged during the First World War, spas were built during the interwar period, the park was organized, the polyclinic was completed and the most important buildings were repaired.
After the Second World War, mineral water wells were installed in Birštonas, habitats and sanatoriums were built, and the complex began to function throughout the year.
During the Soviet era, Birštonas became a prestigious tourist center.
During the construction of the Kaunas hydroelectric power station, a wall was formed around 1960, protecting the city from the rising waters of the Nemunas.
Birštonas City Municipality was established in 1995.
