Veryga: We are approaching the limits of testability

“It just came to our knowledge then. Because countries like Germany and France, which have full institutes, the Koch, Pasteur institutes, which have been working in these fields for many decades, have not found anything better. We see quarantines being announced in France and Germany, and as long as there are no vaccines (quarantine or movement restrictions and masks), specific measures make it possible to stop the spread of the virus, “A. Veryga told LRT radio on Friday morning.

“Scientists will not think of miracles, beds can be built in hospitals, but there will be no more doctors. These are definitely some miracle solutions, apparently they are not worth (wait – ELTA), “said A. Veryga.

According to the minister, it is unlikely that the government, which will finish its work after the Seimas elections, will find time to work with a group of experts convened by the president.

“It should be understood that no matter how the council is convened, it has no powers. The government makes decisions ”, emphasized A. Veryga.

According to him, the effort to involve another group of experts in the work process in managing the coronavirus crisis can only cost additional time.

“The government has its own mechanism and we have to surrender to several more mechanisms, it is time … We cannot connect to the mechanisms indefinitely, because it takes people out of work and we don’t have to sit, sit, argue. I don’t want to anticipate to no one, but we and the scientists are communicating (…) As I said, do not overestimate (presidential initiative – ELTA), because sometimes people imagine that the scientists gathered will find some miraculous solution ”, said the Minister.

Mr. Nausėda met with healthcare professionals on Thursday, who will form a group of experts on managing the COVID-19 pandemic at the president’s initiative. According to the Presidency, the Council of Health Experts will analyze, evaluate and make recommendations to the responsible authorities to stop the spread of the virus. It will also seek to ensure that the pandemic management plans are implemented effectively through the formation of a new ruling majority and a change in the leadership of the Ministry of Health.

The future government is surprised

Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga wonders why the ruling majority formed by the right rejected the proposed aid: to familiarize himself with the current situation of the health system by a person who will replace him in the ministry.

“It seems that the new ruling majority of us really don’t want to hear anything,” A. Veryga told LRT radio.

“I have made a proposal of this type in public to be able to show, explain, present to a person who will be named or will make it clear (who will be named – ELTA) a certain topic. This was called by the future prime minister an attempt to evade responsibility. So we will not offer under duress. Apparently, people feel like they know they seem to have a good plan or even better than ours. But we’ll see ”, continued the minister, remembering at the same time how difficult it was to hold the position of Minister of Health.

“As I recall, it was difficult for me to get to the position of Minister and not be on COVID-19. This is a really difficult area and it takes a good half year to understand and dig into everything to put together a team. When it has to be done in a situation like this (COVID-19 – ELTA), it will be very difficult ”, said A. Veryga.

We are approaching the limits of hotline and testing capabilities

Lithuania is approaching the limits of the coronavirus hotline and testing capabilities, says Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga.

“We have to understand that we are reaching certain limits and the time will come when we will definitely not be able to answer or test everything we need, and some of us apparently and we can no longer do it,” the minister told LRT radio on Friday.

“The spread is very fast, people continue to communicate, some do not protect themselves, behave irresponsibly and then transfer all this responsibility to the health system, it is small to say that we are going to celebrate to treat and receive them,” he emphasized.

When asked in which sectors of the health system the situation is most difficult, the minister said that in all.

“Everywhere these limits are reached, based on the fact that it is not easy to call, as you say (…) and there really are solutions to electronically record an abbreviated protocol of what the operator tells a person to do. It would be faster to pick up the phone and answer it, ”he said.

He stressed that testing labs also have their own physical limits, their staff is overwhelmed, and the team cannot test an infinite number of tests.

“Everyone is looking for solutions, but at the same time the public must realize that it will not be an inexhaustible resource and if we don’t stop, stop and celebrate, one day the labs will stop examining all samples and it is unrealistic to expect that no country can achieve, “said A. Veryga.

The minister noted that Lithuania is one of the European countries that investigates the most and that the scope of testing is already increasing.

“They are increasing (…) we have investigated five thousand, now we are investigating twelve, that is more than double the capacity, but let’s stop expecting it to be an infinite resource, an infinite resource that as many as we want, that number will become” He said.”

Speaking about the testing strategy applied in Lithuania, the minister emphasized that the situation is constantly changing and stated that researchers are waiting for information on at least two new methods that could help increase the total number of studies.

“One thing that we are waiting for, and it looks like we will get the scientists’ conclusions about so-called batch tests right away, is that when multiple samples are put together and tested in a laboratory, only more samples would be allowed to be analyzed. “Another is the discussion of the so-called rapid PCR tests (…). At least some companies have developed similar tests, which are performed very quickly and are already being used by medical institutions to analyze bedridden patients.” said A. Veryga.

According to him, information is also expected from Slovakia, which is trying to use these extremely fast tests for a very large public survey.

Recently, Lithuania and many other countries have experienced a rapid increase in the number of coronavirus cases, as a result of which countries are introducing various restrictions on social life.

Another record number of new coronavirus cases was confirmed in Lithuania on Wednesday: 950 and six people died.
