Smoking on the balconies, only with the consent of all the neighbors: Nausėda signed amendments to the law

The country’s chief spokesman, Antanas Bubnelis, informed BNS on Thursday that the amendments were signed on October 13.

The presidency does not usually disseminate information on laws signed separately, it only reports on the veto or on the president’s own initiatives.

The Seimas adopted the amendments on the first day of October.

They legalize that starting in 2021, residents will no longer be able to smoke on the balconies of apartment buildings if at least one resident of the house objects.

The amendments were proposed by the Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga and 13 other members of the Seimas.

If the neighbors do not object, smokers should ensure that the smoke does not enter the premises of other residents of the house. Signs to ban smoking on balconies would be the responsibility of the building manager, community or municipality.

Among other things, the amendments prohibit smoking during sports competitions or other outdoor events, covered public transport stops, playgrounds and outdoor dining venues.

This prohibition will not apply to smoking areas.

Since 2014, the Seimas has repeatedly rejected proposals to ban smoking on balconies. Opponents of the amendments argue that the ban would not be feasible.

Police Commissioner General Renatas Požėla BNS has said that the police will not give priority to smoking violations on the balconies.

The Lithuanian police chief urged residents to actively record the rapes themselves and provide the police with evidence that the officers would not have to go to the scene.
