The organs of the first deceased were brought to the Santara clinics from the Kaunas clinics in a Mi-8 helicopter around noon. A helicopter landed on the Santariškės ring road at 1 pm. 10 minutes.

According to the National Transplant Office, on Wednesday, October 28, two organ donors were registered at LSMUL Kaunas clinics. Thanks to loved ones, lives will be saved or health improved for even a few people waiting for an organ and tissue donor.

The heart of one of the donors was flown to the VUL Santara clinics by helicopter on the Vilnius traffic ring road on Wednesday afternoon; he was urgently delivered for transplant surgery.

Transplant coordination work at the National Transplant Office of the Ministry of Health (NTB) began on Tuesday, when NTB coordinators received information about the emerging potential donor from the Kaunas Clinics of the Lithuanian Health Sciences Hospital.

Following the positive decision of the deceased’s relatives to donate organs and tissues for donation, the heart, kidneys, cornea and other tissues were eligible for transplantation. Recipients who were expecting organs and tissues were informed about the resulting donor.

The coordination work that lasted more than a day ended in the operating rooms. The kidneys of the deceased were transplanted to the LSMUL recipient at the Kaunas clinics, whose heart was rushed from Kaunas to Vilnius by a Lithuanian Air Force helicopter at the VUL Santara clinics.

Due to the extremely short time of cardiac ischemia, a helicopter is always used to transport this organ to another city or country during the heart transplant process.

Before finalizing the first transplant process, LSMUL Kaunas Clinics reported on another possible donor, whose relatives agreed to donate organs and tissues, took heart, kidneys, liver, cornea and other tissues for transplantation. Heart and kidney transplant operations were performed at the same LSMUL Kaunas clinics, the liver was delivered to VUL Santara clinics for ambulance surgery.
