With the daily deterioration of the epidemiological situation in Lithuania, the country’s main cities have been classified as a red zone since Monday. This means tighter restrictions and an imminent quarantine, but at the same time it brought additional confusion. The mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis, in a speech to the specialists of the National Center for Public Health, requests that the information that is disseminated daily on the indicators of the metropolitan areas be specified. This would help to react more quickly in decision-making and would not create additional stress for the population.

“Of course, Kaunas is the heart of Lithuania, but when we talk about serious things, let’s call them by their real names. Kaunas County is not a city, therefore, by publishing the increasing number of days of COVID-19 in public space every day, it is necessary to specify exactly how many cases of the disease are registered in the city municipality and how many in the rest. We propose to isolate and present the coronavirus morbidity rates of at least five major cities in Lithuania by separate from counties Most of the country’s population is concentrated here, so they need to get clear and specific information and see a real, undistorted picture. This will help avoid potential misunderstandings and confusion.

We are not intimidated by the assigned red color, we will continue to strengthen actions and preventive measures to handle the situation in the most effective way possible, but people certainly will not benefit from such excessive tension or even panic during this difficult period. I believe in the awareness of Kaunas residents that we can catch up and do our best with our responsible behavior to protect ourselves and those around us, ”said V. Matijošaitis.

We are not intimidated by the assigned red color, we will continue to strengthen actions and preventive measures to handle the situation in the most effective way possible, but people certainly will not benefit from such excessive tension or even panic during this difficult period.

According to him, it is now especially important to have objective information on the daily changing situation regarding COVID-19 in the country and in individual municipalities. This is inevitable in order to react quickly and make the necessary decisions. They must be quick and immediate.

According to V. Matijošaitis, both residents and businesses and other organizations need accurate data to be able to plan their activities and predict the consequences: “It is necessary to ensure that there is as little space as possible for interpretation and unnecessary discussions, because there is no time “.

However, the mayor notes that recently, not only in the case of Kaunas, in the public sphere, the county indicators have been confused with the number of individual city municipalities. This runs the risk of misunderstandings. The worst thing is that this is also reflected in the so-called traffic light color map, where not all municipalities in a situation of threat are currently marked with a red zone.

“We understand the difficult conditions in which NVSC specialists work. Therefore, the City of Kaunas offered their assistance with human resources. It was adopted last week. We have delegated several dozen specialists from the Municipality’s Public Health Office. from the city of Kaunas, but if we see the need, we will try to further expand these forces by also appointing people from the municipal administration, ”added the mayor of Kaunas.

According to the Ministry of Health, the red zone includes those municipalities where the incidence exceeds 50 cases per 100,000. population, positive tests – 4 percent. and more, and the proportion of cases not related to outbreaks or outbreaks is higher than 30%. per week. Municipalities with a morbidity of more than 150 cases per 100,000 are also marked in red. the proportion of population and cases not related to outbreaks or outbreaks is 30%. or more per week, at least 10 cases per week must be registered with the municipality.
