Visvaldas Matijošaitis, the mayor of Kaunas, who supported the Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union and its outgoing Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, hopes to maintain a dialogue with the new government and urges it to focus on managing the situation in COVID- 19.
“There will be enough time and space to show our love for Kaunas, but so far the most important thing is to focus on today’s” fires “: the worsening of the COVID-19 situation in the country. The health and safety of the population is and it must stay first, ”says the mayor of Kaunas in a comment sent to journalists on Monday.
“Kaunas had a really constructive dialogue with the previous government and the Seimas. I would very much like it to continue to be so with the future new government of the country,” he added.
The mayor of Kaunas congratulated the new winners of the Seimas and stated that people in the national government want to see mainly right-wing forces.
There will be enough time and space to show your love for Kaunas, but so far the most important thing is to focus on the current “fires” – the worsening COVID-19 situation in the country.
“Now the elected will have to prove that these mandates are worth it. Kaunas has done a great job implementing projects that are important not only for the city, but also for the whole of Lithuania, therefore my only wish is that the new rulers who they come to the Seimas and the Government understands and appreciates all this. We cannot stop half-doing what is important for the people of the whole country, “he emphasized.
The mayor of Kaunas is the leader of the public movement “United Kaunas”, this movement does not participate in national politics, but four of its representatives participated in the elections of the Seimas in the list of “peasants”.
V. Matijošaitis has repeatedly expressed his support for the “peasant” government and thanked S. Skvernelis for supporting the infrastructure projects in Kaunas.
Kaunas, among other projects, is currently continuing the reconstruction of the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums, and the construction of the “Mokslo sala” scientific popularization center has begun. Government support is provided for these projects.
Conservatives who have been in the opposition so far won Sunday’s elections with 50 seats and began talks on a ruling center-right coalition with the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party. These forces would have a fragile majority of 74 members in the Seimas. Conservatives are calling for other parties to meet as well.
In Kaunas, Vieningas Kaunas has a majority: 33 of the 41 seats, the remaining eight belong to conservatives working in the opposition for a second term.
Are you satisfied with the results of the Seimas elections?
