With the dramatic increase in COVID-19 infections in the country, the government is re-enforcing stricter restrictions on events, including sports matches.

Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga announced on Monday that a proposal has been made to ban spectators from the arenas of municipalities where local quarantine has already been introduced and will be announced in the near future.

This restriction will be decided on Wednesday. If approved, it will go into effect on Friday. In this case, Kaunas “Žalgiris”, Klaipėda “Neptūnas”, Pasvalys “Pieno Žvaigždės” and Vilnius “Rytas” will play home games without the support of their fans.

Until now, sporting events were required to seat spectators every other chair while maintaining a social distance from the subway.

4376 spectators visited the LKL derby at the Siemens Arena between Vilnius Rytas and Kaunas Žalgiris on Sunday.

5,131 fans turned out for the Euroleague game with Valencia Basket, organized in Kaunas last week, and in mid-October 5011 spectators for the duel with Anadolu Efes from Istanbul.

Since Monday (October 26), the quarantine entered into force in the municipalities of Elektrėnai, Joniškis district, Jurbarkas district, Kelmė district, Klaipėda district, Kretinga district, Marijampolė, Pasvalys district, Plungė district, Skuodas district, Šiauliai district, Švenčionys district. The quarantine was extended in the municipality of the Raseiniai district.

During Monday’s meeting, this list was supplemented by six more municipalities: Kaunas City, Klaipėda City, Šilalė District, Širvintos District, Telšiai District, Trakai District, Vilnius City and Vilnius District. Quarantine restrictions will apply starting Wednesday (October 28).
