Currently, only LSMU Kaunas Hospital accepts COVID-19 infected patients in Kaunas. They are hospitalized in the Infectious Diseases Department of this hospital. After detection of COVID-19 cases, this section includes patients from all treatment, nursing, care and other institutions in the Kaunas and Kaunas district, as well as those who are brought to the hospital from home.

Two patients have artificial lung ventilation and one receives oxygen.

The COVID-19 morbidity rates in Lithuania have broken records in recent days, but is there an increase in the number of patients treated in hospitals and with more severe coronavirus?

According to Jūratė Kuzmickaitė, Head of the Communication and Marketing Department of the Kaunas Hospital at LSMU, the workload of doctors in recent days has been too intense. In the Infectious Diseases Unit, COVID-19 provided 100 beds for patients. Currently occupies 75, three more patients are being treated in Unit II of Intensive Care and Resuscitation of Adults. Two of them have artificial lung ventilation, one with oxygen.

“75 is the highest number since the beginning of the pandemic. We had up to 25-30 patients in the spring. It is estimated that if it is 70 percent full. COVID-19 patients in the hospital, that is, 70 beds out of 100, the coordinating medical institution of the Kaunas region – LSMU Kaunas Clinics and the Ministry of Health must make a decision in which hospital to establish additional places of hospital treatment for patients with COVID-19. This is likely to be decided on Monday 26 October, “Friday afternoon 15 minutes declared J. Kuzmickaitė.

The oldest patient infected with COVID-19 belongs to the 90-95 age group, the youngest belongs to the 35-40 age group, and has many comorbidities. The most suffered coronavirus patient at LSMU Kaunas Hospital has already spent about a month and a half in the Department of Infectious Diseases.

In fact, the current COVID-19 situation has the highest number of people affected by the pandemic. And while not everyone who responds positively to the COVID-19 study needs a treatment center, the number of hospital hospitals, of course, has also increased. This means that the workload of medical personnel, both doctors and nurses, their assistants, especially in the hottest infectious disease department, is increasing proportionally. As an additional hand, personnel from other departments of the hospital are mobilized, but the epidemic is increasingly rare, employees get sick and those who have been in contact have to isolate themselves ”, the hospital representative described the complicated situation.

The Infectious Diseases Department of LSMU Kaunas Hospital employs 17 physicians, 23 nurses and 30 nursing assistants. These are constantly cared for by the staff of the Department of Pediatrics: 18 doctors and 20 nurses. Because many COVID-19 patients have comorbid conditions, they are visited by physicians from a variety of therapy rooms as needed.

With the current rapid increase in patient numbers, the medical staff is being further strengthened through other units in the same hospital. The help of staff from other medical institutions was not yet needed.

During the entire period of the pandemic, a total of 55 employees of the LSMU Kaunas Hospital were ill with COVID-19, 23 are still ill According to J. Kuzmickaitė, a large number of asymptomatic cases are recorded.
