Rimantas Benetis has been elected rector of LSMU

He was the only one to run for the competition and will replace long-term rector Remigijus Žaliūnas as of November 4.

Representatives from LSMU informed BNS that the Council had approved R. Benet unanimously.

The concept of a five-year program of university activity presented by the rector-elect envisages fostering LSMU’s internationality and openness to change and innovation.

“Today, I see the university as the leading university in Europe in health sciences for the prosperity of society, whose mission is to create, accumulate, systematize and disseminate scientific knowledge, the latest scientific and study achievements, teach and develop a creative, honest, enterprising, educated, healthy, independent and enterprising personality, to promote democracy and prosperity, to develop a healthy and educated society, ”says LSMU’s rector-elect.

R. Benetis is long-term director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic and director of the Institute of Cardiology. He has published almost half a thousand scientific articles and is awarded the Officer Cross of the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas

R. Žaliūnas has led LSMU for two terms since 2010, prior to that he also led two terms for Kaunas Medical University, which after merging with the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy became LSMU.
