Distributed under the name Veklury by California-based pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences Inc., the drug shortened recovery time by about five days, and patients who received hospitalization took an average of 10 days and 15 days without treatment, according to a large study conducted by the US National Institute of Health.

The FDA had approved the use of remdesivir in coronavirus-infected patients in the spring, and the drug is now the first officially approved drug in the United States for COVID-19.

Gilead has indicated that Veklury can be used in people 12 years of age and older who weigh at least 40 kg if their condition requires hospitalization due to a coronavirus infection. It works by blocking the way the virus reproduces.
