The old long-abandoned territory of the ancient Neris Valley in Šnipiškės is being finished; residents will soon be able to spend their free time in this place. Before the project, part of this area was occupied by a heavy transport storage site and impassable shrubs.
Vilnius residents will be able to reach the valley of the ancient river Neris via the already equipped bicycle and pedestrian paths from Linkmenų and Ozo streets. The path from Calle Ozo will allow you to admire unexpected panoramic views. To distribute traffic flows and ensure safety, it was decided to separate bicycle and pedestrian routes, including a planned green belt. The bike path is designed to maintain a low slope of the road, so it will be convenient for daily traffic. Most of the trails are wheelchair accessible. Final works are currently underway: the marked cycle lanes are being completed, a flat surface is being formed, lawns are being planted and additional tree trimming work is being carried out.
“This park is a very important connecting part of the city: the vegetation of the Senvagė valley will become a connection between the residential area of Oz Park and the central part of the city. The hiking and cycling routes in the park will allow for residents to get to the city center quickly and ecologically, which is our priority. At the same time, the park and all its recreational infrastructure are intended for the residents of the adjacent residential neighborhood, another welcoming space for recreation right out of the gate of the house, ”said Mindaugas Pakalnis, the city’s chief architect, of the new project.
Senvagė Lakes Trails are intended not only for transit traffic, but also for recreation right here in nature. As the area is very limited by adjacent parcels and steep slopes, part of the roads are designed as pontoon terraces over the water. In order to preserve the integrity and naturalness of the landscape (the expressive relief area with lakes was formed by the descending water courses of the thaw), it was decided to use thermo-wood for terraces, stairs and benches. The lake terraces will be accessible by ramps and stairs already installed, but there is still work to be done on the banks; In the near future, shoreline leveling and landscaping work is planned, to be completed in the spring.
At present, on the territory of the new park a playground, a universal sports field with outdoor exercise machines, a petanque court and quiet green recreation areas are being completed.
The authors of the project, architects of the municipal company Vilniaus Planas (project manager Vincas Brezgys, architects Paulius Jonys and Rūta Astasevičiūtė), while preparing the project and communicating with local residents and the fabrikas community of VGTU Linkmenų, tried to preserve the The architects were clear about how important it was for the city that as many residents as possible had a green area near the house where they could relax from the hustle and bustle of the city, actively spend time or meet with neighbors.
When creating these new leisure spaces in Šnipiškės, the designers also gave priority to the safety of the population, so lighting and a network of video surveillance cameras are envisaged on the territory. Although this park is not officially open yet, you can already meet many Vilnius residents who enjoy this leisure space. Neighbors also receive comments on certain works, so it is important to note that the works are not yet finished, the dog training field and its surroundings will be maintained, and the playgrounds will be maintained.
Despite the difficulties encountered, the project authors highlighted the successful cooperation with the project contractor, Gilesta, who took all feedback into account and carried out the work smoothly and with high quality.
