The author of the idea of the trip was not J.Tiškevičius himself, but a Polish writer, the future winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1905) Henrikas Senkevičius (1846-1916), who already had a long experience in travel, because in 1872-1873. went to North America in the 19th century. In the late 1990s, to Italy, Greece (Athens), the Ottoman Empire (Constantinople), Spain.
With the support of the administration of the Warsaw-based newspaper Słowo, he began planning a trip to distant Africa. Committed to capturing travel adventures and sharing them with readers of the Słowo newspaper, the writer sought out a partner.
Jonas Vytautas Emanuelis Tiškevičius found out about these searches and realized that it was a great opportunity for his only son, Jonas, to get acquainted with the world. Therefore, he contacted H. Senkevičius, agreed to financially support this trip and agreed that his son Jonas would go on the trip together.
The great journey of the young nobleman J.Tiškevičius began in 1890. at the beginning of December, in the Trakai Vokė mansion managed by the parents.
It was agreed to meet the future fellow traveler H. Senkevičius in the Italian capital Rome, to which he also awaited a short journey. It was decided to travel through Poland, which was led by a straight road, namely the Lentvaris-Warsaw railway section.
From the latter he went to Krakow, and from there he went directly to Rome. Named Eternal City, the Italian capital was reached on December 13.
We learned about this from the first letter of J. Tiškevičius addressed to the relatives, written during the trip, which survived to this day. This letter describes the first impressions upon arrival in Italy. Everything surprises in the foreign country: the people, the size of the city and the historical heritage.
In a relatively short time, J. Tiškevičius wanted to see everything possible, so no time was wasted. On the first day of the visit, he visited Gaetano Donizzet’s opera in two acts “Alina, regina di Golconda” (Alina, Queen of Golonda). Later, he took a walk through the city, along Via del Corso, during which he visited the Villa Borghese park and the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, which is most memorable for the traveler.
The desire to see as much as possible burned in the traveler’s heart, so on December 17. J. Tiškevičius himself wrote in the letter: “ […] how I spent the last days: I visited, visited and visited! Of course, about the fact that I could see everything, and there couldn’t be any speech, because it takes about a month, I tried to keep an eye on the basics. “
So in a relatively short time, 4 days, the young nobleman visited the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Paul’s Catacombs, Borghese Gallery, Caracal Bath.
Also during this period, we finally managed to meet H. Senkevičius face to face. Immediately for a moment, both fellow travelers headed to the port to buy boat tickets, which, when purchased, finally revealed the plan for the entire trip: December 20. to depart from Naples to Ismail (Egypt), from where it is planned to take a train to Cairo, to which, upon arrival on the 24th, to celebrate and St. Christmas. Leave Cairo on December 29. and travel to Suez, from there to Aswan, Aden (Yemen) and finally to Zanzibar.
