Due to the spread of the coronavirus, a new Surgical Department is being formed in the Kaunas clinics, emergency care continues to be provided, but scheduled operations may be delayed for some time, says Renaldas Jurkevičius, the head of the hospital.
On Saturday, the National Center for Public Health announced that ten new cases had been identified in the Department of Surgery of the Kaunas Clinics: seven patients and three employees had been infected with the coronavirus.
R. Jurkevičius told BNS on Saturday that currently a total of eleven patients and seven employees of this department suffer from coronavirus. According to him, the Clinics have not yet had such a large number of infections in one department.
“We have not had such a large number of infected patients or staff in the Clinics,” the director of the LSMU Kaunas clinics told BNS.
According to R. Jurkevičius, emergency surgical assistance continues to be provided, and as of Monday, the Department of Surgery must be established in the same building, only on the next floor, where new patients will be accommodated.
“Currently, Admissions and Emergencies Department operations are being provided, teams have been formed throughout the weekend to provide that assistance, investigations are being completed, additional epidemiological investigations are being completed today, and we will probably form a new Surgery Unit entirely. clean Monday. We will admit new patients, “said the hospital director.
According to him, even staff and patients with minimal contact will remain in the old room, and the new one will have teams of doctors who have not been in full contact, who will ensure the safe delivery of care.
“Those who have not worked or been on vacation, or left and surgeons will be accepted from other departments, but here we will definitely be in detail on Monday,” said R. Jurkevičius about the doctors who will work in the surgery department.
We will probably set up a brand new and completely clean Surgery Unit on Monday to accommodate new patients.
According to him, patients may have to wait a week or more for planned surgeries, and emergency care is the most important thing at this time.
“Planned surgeries like, for example, hernias or the like, we can feel sorry for the patients, but we may have to wait a week for them. But they can really wait without much harm to their health, “said R. Jurkevičius.
In other wards of the Kaunas clinics, scheduled procedures will continue to run as usual, and as of Tuesday, all wards except the Surgical Ward will continue to admit scheduled patients.
A total of 7,269 cases of the COVID-19 disease have been confirmed in Lithuania, 4,025 people are still ill, 3,097 have recovered and 113 patients have died.
