According to preliminary data, the asylum seekers were infected while in Lithuania.
“It just came to our notice then. An asylum seeker felt unwell, was taken to the Santara clinics and a virus was detected,” said Giedrius Mišutis, representative of the State Border Guard Service (SBGS).
The Foreigners Registration Center is owned by SBGS and is guarded by officials of the Service.
The first coronavirus case was an asylum seeker from Belarus. Since he arrived in Lithuania a long time ago, it is believed that he got infected while he was here.
An asylum seeker felt unwell and was transferred to a clinic in Santara, where the virus was detected.
COVID-19 was also established for the other three foreigners who had closer contact with him.
The National Center for Public Health reported Wednesday that a total of four cases of coronavirus were detected in the Alien Registration Center, but according to the SBGS, the number of cases is double.
“On Wednesday, positive responses were received about four more asylum seekers. A total of eight cases of COVID-19 were confirmed among asylum seekers,” G. Mišutis told BNS.
According to him, the doctors at the center take the smears on the spot and transport them to the laboratory. According to the latest data, 12 samples were delivered, responses are expected on Thursday.
Both center staff and SBGS officials will be inspected. There are currently five employees of the Alien Registration Center in self-isolation: two nurses, a doctor, a social worker and a psychologist.
According to G.Mišutis, all those infected live in one floor of the center, on the third, where individual foreign asylum seekers are located.
“Special partitions are now being made in the center, separated as far as possible according to the recommendations of the National Center for Society. Measures are being taken throughout the center,” said a representative from SBGS.
As of Monday, the right of asylum seekers to leave the center was restricted and visitors were prohibited from entering the center.
There are now a total of 61 foreigners living in the Foreigners Registration Center.
The Aliens Registration Center welcomes foreigners who have crossed the border illegally or who have applied for asylum.
