In the last day, 4,739 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the country, and 52 people infected by coronavirus have died.

There were 4,280 new infections and 76 deaths on Thursday. The number of COVID-19 victims that day was the highest since the outbreak in the country.

The total number of people infected with coronavirus in the country has risen to 116,338 since the epidemic began in March, and 2,919 people have died, authorities said.

According to the Ministry of Health, the most recent victims were people between 45 and 97 years old. Six of them were directly attributed to coronavirus infection, and the other 46 also had comorbidities.

On Friday morning, 4,407 patients with coronavirus infection were treated in hospitals in the country, of which 320 required artificial lung ventilation.

A total of 776,875 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Poland to date, including 1,385 in the last day, according to the Ministry of Health.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that protective masks will be mandatory in public places and outdoors throughout Poland from Saturday.

“The second wave has caught up with us and we must respond decisively,” the head of government told reporters, adding that now the 38 million territory of the country of residence will be considered a “yellow zone.”

“We want to follow a strategy similar to what we followed a few months ago,” but “so far” a strict quarantine is not needed, he said.

According to the prime minister, Poland has “around 500 free lung ventilators”, and 60% of the hospital beds reserved for COVID-19 patients remain free.

However, the media reported that beds were already tight in the parts of the country most affected by the epidemic.

Starting Saturday, 38 counties will be considered “red” zones, with stricter restrictions on public and family events.
