The LKF had submitted an application to organize a European Championship selection round based on the bubble format in Vilnius. In response to the pandemic, FIBA changed the qualification procedure for the European Championship, reducing the number of unnecessary trips and contacts.

Lithuanians met the most important criteria established by FIBA: standards of medical care and travel guarantees.

Had the LKF not been given the right to inflate the FIBA window bubble in Vilnius, Lithuanian basketball players would have had to travel to another country.

“Eight groups applied for eight groups, but to our knowledge, the countries in our group, having learned that we are nominating and have an advantage over two home games, did not apply. We are happy to have maintained that home advantage for our team.

The hosts of the February “bubble” should already be identified in December. There are already many applicants who have also applied to host those qualifying tournaments. We don’t have an advantage there, but if we were good at evaluating now, anything could be. First of all, we have to organize the next tournament well, ”said Mindaugas Špokas, LKF General Secretary-Director.

In submitting this request, LKF had the support of the Government, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, the Ministry of Health and the Vilnius City Council. This should bring economic benefits to Lithuania and Lithuanian basketball players: the opportunity to play within their borders.

According to the LKF, the women’s national team will play in the European Championship qualifiers in Istanbul in November.
