Americans HJ Alter and Ch. Rice and Briton Houghton have won Nobel Prizes for their contribution to the fight against blood-borne hepatitis C, a global health problem that puts people around the world at risk.
HJ Alter contributed to the discovery of the hepatitis C virus through methodological studies that showed that chronic hepatitis was often caused by an unknown virus.
Mr. Houghton, using a previously untested method, isolated the genome of the new virus, which was named the hepatitis C virus.
Ch. Rice provided evidence that only the hepatitis C virus could have caused this particular hepatitis.
Thus, thanks to the contribution of these researchers, the hepatitis C virus can be stopped. Their research has made it possible to invent new blood tests and drugs that have saved the lives of millions of people.
The Nobel laureates, in addition to international fame, will share 10 million. Swedish crowns (about 950 thousand euros)
The Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry will be announced on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
