Recently, the efforts of Germany, France and other countries have been de-escalating the conflict in the eastern Mediterranean, trying to find certain points of consensus, trying to speak with the Turkish leader. In Belarus, we have exactly the opposite situation, when former Belarusian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenko is not at all prepared for any mediation, contact with the Western world, he rejects it, “said the head of state in a comment sent to BNS.

He said it after the first night of the European Union summit, which will last two days.

“In this situation, we must act in principle: to assert that mediation services are currently unacceptable for Belarus, Lukashenko is trying to preserve power at all costs, therefore, in these circumstances, sanctions are the only means of influence. “. (…) In the meantime, we should be more flexible with regard to Turkey and, seeing the hope that the situation could be reduced, we should not make decisions on sanctions now, as this would aggravate the situation, ”said G. Nausėda.

According to him, Cyprus continues to try to link these two problems.

“The representative of Cyprus, as before and today, stressed the need to address these issues together. (…) The texts will be aligned shortly. We will see if we can overcome that difficult barrier, which is called consensus,” he said. President.

The countries of the European Union have decided in principle to impose sanctions on the Minsk regime, but they are being blocked by Cyprus, which demands similar measures against Turkey, with which the country does not agree on the exploration of natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean .

The United Kingdom and Canada announced sanctions against Belarus on Tuesday. The United States also had to introduce them to the Minsk regime, but according to G. Nausėda, the United States is waiting for an “EU step”.

He also said that he had presented an aid plan to Belarus to European leaders, which was “very well received”.

“Definitely it will not be approved today and it should not be approved in this EVS, but the idea has already been presented and you just have to give it a certain body, an organizational form. (…) We are very aware that dictatorships are not eternal, the spring of democracy comes after dictatorships. Belarus’s democratic society deserves to be helped to integrate more quickly into the EU single market, perhaps to take advantage of the visa-free regime and to enjoy freer access to financial resources, ”said G. Nausda .

“This certainly will not necessarily mean some kind of forced integration of Belarus into the EU, it will choose its own path and see how to better balance its interests between East and West,” added the head of state.

G. Nausėda presented this plan together with the leaders of Poland and Romania.

In Belarus there have been unprecedented protests for almost two months over the presidential elections on August 9, which were declared the winners by Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and western countries consider these elections to be rigged.
