Russian President Vladimir Putin has told French leader Emmanuel Macron that any attempt at other sovereign state affairs is unacceptable.
The two presidents discussed the situation in Belarus by phone on Wednesday. The Kremlin reports that Putin has emphasized Russia’s principled position that any attempt to change the internal affairs of a sovereign state and to pressure the judiciary is unacceptable.
Earlier this week, E. Macron, who was based in Vilnius, met with the Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Cichanouskaya. After the meeting, the French president said that it would be appropriate for the OSCE to undertake a mediation mission in Belarus and also said that dialogue with Russia and talks with Vladimir Putin were also necessary to resolve the crisis.
According to TASS, the conversation between Putin and Macron was started by the French president and focused on the crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh, with both leaders calling on Azerbaijan and the army to immediately cease fire and refrain from escalating tensions.
EU decision on sanctions expected
The situation in Belarus should receive close attention at the European Council (EVS), which begins in Brussels on Thursday.
On the eve of the two-day meeting, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda expressed his hope that the EU would finally impose sanctions against Lukashenko’s regime, most of whom were no longer the leader of Belarus after the rigged election results. and the force of violence against peaceful protesters.
European and world states are imposing sanctions on Belarus one after another, the European Union must show a strong and immediate activation of sanctions, including the person of Alexander Lukashenko, the head of state, in a press release issued on Wednesday.
The sanctions against Lukashenko and his entourage have been announced separately by the Baltic States and for a week by the United Kingdom and Canada.
According to a Reuters source, the United States also had to join the sanctions. But Washington abstains pending the EVS ruling.
The fact that EU foreign ministers have not previously adopted sanctions against Belarus unanimously because they have been blocked by Cyprus will link the decision to a call for sanctions against Turkey for its gas consumption activities in the eastern Mediterranean.
