The government will have three options to increase MMA

Lithuanian unions, as before, propose to increase the MMA by 56 euros to 663 euros (before taxes). Government representatives propose to follow the calculations of the Bank of Lithuania and increase the MMA to 642 euros, but at the same time argue in the council for another month.

At the time, business representatives continued to ask that the MMA issue not be considered.

Rūta Skyrienė, the new chairman of the board and chief executive of the Investor Forum, an association that brings together foreign investors, says that he will propose to postpone the decision to increase MMA for now, he says.

“The decision should be postponed because the situation is not very good, despite all the optimistic forecasts of economists. Companies are seeing that things are not going well, the image may be distorted and the enormous support that has been distributed. In such a situation, making economic decisions is quite risky, we do not know how the situation will change. As the elections approach, we must also consider whether it is ethical to establish the MMA now, and perhaps it is logical to leave it to the new government, ”R. Skyrienė told BNS on Wednesday.

The Deputy Minister of Social Security and Labor, Eglė Radišauskienė, stressed that the aim of the Tripartite Council is social dialogue, so it is important to find a compromise. However, if the council does not agree, the decision will be made by the government.

“The figure expressed by the Bank of Lithuania is 642 euros. We agree, but we suggest looking for a solution. If we really don’t find it, then we stick to separate opinions, then the government will decide, “the deputy minister said at the meeting.

Employers’ representatives said the decision should be postponed due to the excessively uncertain economic situation and the upcoming elections.

“There is an extreme situation, companies are thinking about how to survive, so we suggest not to consider this issue, postpone it after the elections and come back maybe next year, when the situation will improve,” said Ričardas Sartatavičius, head of the Confederation of Industrialists of Lithuania, at the meeting.

“The elections are in a week and a half, it is natural that this decision is unequivocally politicized and our practical approach says: let’s take the accelerator and make a decision after the elections. Not necessarily next year, but if the elections take place, we will not have the phenomenon of political pressure, “said Andrius Romanovskis, president of the Lithuanian Business Confederation.

At that time, the unionists demanded that the decision and the discussions be delayed.

“You (the employers, BNS) never agreed that the MMA should increase as much as the economy allowed in principle. And for Covid-19 (…) we have to learn to work, to protect workers during a pandemic. (…) We cannot leave people in the dark about what to do next and how things will continue. We can make this decision and trust our economists, who predict that our economy will develop well, “said Kristina Krupavičienė, president of the Solidarity union.

Social Security and Labor Minister Linas Kukuraitis said last week that if a common position cannot be found, the decision will have to be made by the government.

According to L. Kukuraitis, the MMA could grow by 35 euros to 642 euros from January next year. According to him, the Ministry is inclined to agree with the Bank of Lithuania’s new calculations that the MMA should reach 48.1% next year. average salary (VMU). The proportion is now 47.5 percent.

The MMA is currently € 607 (before tax), an increase from January this year.
