This skyscraper is on the list of the most important buildings of the 20th century: what makes it so special?

Sumet sincerely hated postmodern architecture for you. She seemed boring, uniform, uncreative, and memorable. So when she was tasked with designing a new bank building, she didn’t hesitate for a long time.

You were inspired by your child’s toys. Among them he saw a robot. The strict shapes of the robot with a clearly visible face inspired the architect to create a building reminiscent of a toy robot. At the same time, this work symbolizes the modernity of banks in the digital age and is a kind of protest against the postmodern style of architecture.

The robot building, now home to the United Overseas Bank, was completed in Bangkok in 1986. It cost $ 10 million to build, has 20 floors. It has several interesting solutions.

For example, the lower floors are larger than the upper floors. The building itself is visually divided into two parts and is as symmetrical as those toy robots. The upper part of the Robot building resembles a robot’s head, it has a pair of antennas and even eyes, but these are all functional components of the building, not decorative details.

Those antennas work as lightning rods. There are also communication antennas next to them. The robot’s eyes are real windows with metal shutters. The walnuts that adorn the side of the Robot building are also real – when made of glass-reinforced concrete, they were the largest walnuts in the world. In fact, they are structural elements of the building, although, of course, it cannot be denied that they were not necessary.

The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art has included the Robot building in its list of the 50 most important buildings of the 20th century. This building has received many awards and is now often photographed by tourists.
