“It just came to our notice then. It is planned to minimize risks and do everything possible to keep citizens safe,” the minister told BNS on Tuesday.
He said this after a meeting of the government’s National Security Commission, where a strategy to buy a coronavirus vaccine was discussed.
“We discussed all the threats and details, what strategy should Lithuania adopt, how should it behave,” said A. Veryga.
He also claimed that he could not comment in detail on the planned purchase and its risks, these comments, according to the minister, will be provided by Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis on Wednesday.
“I cannot comment, we agreed that the prime minister would make those comments tomorrow after the meeting,” said the health minister.
Finance Minister Vilius Šapoka and State Security Department head Darius Jauniškis did not comment on the detailed content of the meeting.
The government plans to discuss the issue of coronavirus vaccines in a meeting on Wednesday.
According to A. Veryga, it is about buying vaccines from seven manufacturers, although the European Commission has signed an agreement with the British and Swedish pharmaceutical AstraZeneca.
The Prime Minister and the Minister of Health say that if all vaccines are shown to be safe and effective, Lithuania’s maximum purchase may require more than 100 million. but the price may go down.
According to the head of government, S. Skvernelis, it may be necessary to pay for vaccines from the end of this year until the third quarter of next year.
It is estimated that around 70% will want to get vaccinated in Lithuania. Population, cooperation with other countries, and sharing of the vaccine so it doesn’t have to be thrown away if a higher proportion of people refuse to be vaccinated are also being considered.
