The Czech Republic was one of the first European countries to start lifting quarantine restrictions. In June, a Covid-19 farewell party was held on the medieval Charles Bridge in Prague.

Babish apologized at a time when many European countries are facing a second wave of coronavirus after the summer, at the end of which the number of new COVID-19 cases began to grow rapidly.

“Even I was distracted by the upcoming summer and the general mood. It was a mistake that I don’t want to repeat, ”the billionaire politician said in a televised speech.

The Czech Republic had managed to contain the COVID-19 outbreak in the spring due to imposed restrictions, but the government withdrew most of the measures just before the summer.

Last Thursday, a record number of 3,130 new cases of COVID-19 were registered in the Czech Republic, almost the same as in the whole of March.

Interior Minister Jan Hamaček said that the Czech Republic is currently the second in the European Union in terms of the spread of the coronavirus, the situation is deteriorating faster only in Spain.

“It just came to our knowledge then. Experts say that after reaching 120,000 new cases of infection per month, we will run out of hospital beds. We will do everything we can to prevent it,” Hamaček said.

Czech Health Minister Adam Vojtech resigned on Monday. He was immediately replaced by epidemiologist Roman Prymula, who helped coordinate government action to control the coronavirus outbreak.

The COVID-19 outbreak has spread especially rapidly in the Czech Republic in recent weeks. Before the start of summer, almost all the restrictions imposed after the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March were lifted in the Czech Republic.

In the Czech Republic, the number of COVID-19 cases exceeded 50,000, the Health Ministry reported on Monday, Reuters reports.

Of the 50,071 cases, 25,336 were recovered and 521 died. In September, the total number of cases in the country doubled: the spread of infections in terms of population is the second fastest in Europe, only surpassed by Spain.

Due to the increasing number of new COVID-19 cases, stricter restrictions on the coronavirus were introduced in mid-September.

Restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs and similar venues will only be able to accommodate as many visitors as there are seats, said the Ministry of Health (SAM).

Also, for all indoor events attended by more than 10 people, a seat must be assigned for each person. It is supposed to create a “certain distance” between people, the ministry said. It is true that so far exceptions have been announced for exhibitions and fairs.
