A joint meeting of the governments of Lithuania and Poland is held in Vilnius

More than 20 ministers from both countries, as well as foreign ministers from both governments, are scheduled to attend the meeting in the House of Lords, with Prime Ministers Saulius Skvernelis and Mateusz Morawieckis chairing the meeting.

Bilateral talks between the prime ministers and the ministers of Lithuania and Poland are planned before the joint session.

According to the Government of Lithuania, the meetings are planned to summarize the partnership between the countries, to pay attention to strengthening cultural relations and the common policy of historical memory, and cooperation in the field of education.

Health ministers will discuss measures to handle the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is planned to discuss in detail the implementation of strategic energy and transport infrastructure projects and the directions for strengthening economic ties, especially related to the development of the Orlen Lietuva joint stock company and the cooperation of the railway companies of both countries”, states the Government.

The ministers also plan to discuss the security situation in the region and the development of defense cooperation, promising to emphasize the responsibility of Poland and Lithuania in mobilizing the support of the international community for the people of Belarus.

It is planned to sign documents that give meaning to the bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in separate areas.

President Gitanas Nausėda also plans to meet with M. Morawieckis. He and his colleague intend to discuss possible scenarios for the de-escalation of the situation in Belarus, talk about the security and defense of the countries, relations with Russia and other issues.

A joint meeting of governments is convened at the invitation of Prime Minister Skvernel. S. Skvernelis says that Lithuania and Poland speak and agree on “absolutely all questions of bilateral relations and neighborhood policy”.

Lithuanian-Polish relations have heated up notably in recent years, despite ongoing disputes over the history or status of national minorities.
