Sinkevičius: Lithuanian companies have suspended development plans in Belarus

“The expectations would be that the situation remains the same as it is now. Despite optimistic wishes, the reality of life brings some anxiety. From what I know, after meeting with business associations, when someone feels anxious that it is necessary to follow the instructions of Alexander Lukashenko, I mean the Belarusian companies: Belkalis, Azot. They feel some discomfort, but we still have no technical solutions or official reports for the port or the railway, “R. Sinkevičius told reporters Wednesday.

“Lithuanian companies in Belarus do not express themselves in the political context, as far as I know, but all development plans have been suspended. At least two of those larger companies say that nothing painful is likely to happen, and two more they think it may still have an impact, “said the minister.

According to him, in order to attract Belarusian companies to Lithuania, it is intended to initiate amendments that allow registering a company not only with a bank account, but also with an electronic money institution.

“Regarding business relocation to Lithuania, we are interested in high-tech companies, IT specialists, companies that pay taxes in our country, who work here. For the most part, the conditions are debated on how to accelerate the establishment of Belarusian companies here, as the same provisions on money laundering and prevention of terrorism apply throughout the EU. After the last meeting, we intend to prepare amendments to the Companies Act, which would allow to register a company not only with an account in a bank, but also with an account in an electronic money institution, ”said R. Sinkevičius.

He also added that he had not heard of concrete actions to restrict the movement of carriers through Belarus.

“As far as I know, there was a rumor that there was a scare, that something had to be done, and then it was decided at a high level that maybe we would do nothing. We did nothing and nothing happened, “said the minister.

With so-called Belarusian President Lukashenko threatening to divert cargo from Klaipeda state seaport, Transport Minister Jaroslav Narkevich has said that if implemented, Lithuania would suffer, but not drastically.
