The Seimas has modified that operators must provide data on Lithuanians abroad

According to the amendments to the Electronic Communications Law initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), operators are required to provide data on the number of users of the service abroad, forward messages from the Ministry and help contact people if their safety, health or life is threatened.

According to the Ministry, which currently provides consular assistance, Lithuania does not have relevant data on the population abroad that uses the services of the country’s operators, nor is cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the operators regulated.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Lithuania has so far disseminated information to citizens abroad or trapped citizens through separate agreements with operators.

Some lawyers say that the government’s move to force mobile operators to provide data to Lithuanians abroad without people’s consent would violate their right to privacy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs ensures that the data will be requested only in special cases, to help Lithuanian citizens and citizens of the European Union or their relatives in case their safety, life or health are in danger.
