The fifty-fourth match is the Lithuanian national team’s gold final at the 2003 European Championship.


Both Lithuania and Spain reached the final of the 2003 European Championship by marching down a victorious path.

Both teams scored three wins in the group stage. Lithuania, coached by Antanas Sireika, defeated Serbia and Montenegro in the quarterfinals 98:82, and broke France 74:70 in the semifinals after a persistent fight.

The Spanish confidently approached Israel 78:64 in the quarterfinals and triumphed in the 81:79 duel against the Italians.

Halfway through the third half of the final, Arvydas Macijauskas scored three points in the last second of the attack and increased Lithuania’s lead to 14 points – 53:39.

After playing in the last quarter, a minute and a half after another Macijauskas three-point and Eurelijus Žukauskas two-point, Lithuania’s lead reached the limit of 21 points: 73:52.

Two minutes before the end of the game, the Spanish approached the 10-point deficit, but initially Eurelijus Žukauskas charged from above, then the same center scored two more points and was able to return to defense: Lithuania led with a 14-point lead.

In the end, Spain did not come close, and Lithuania was able to celebrate victory in the final with the result 93:84. Thus, for the first time since the restoration of Independence, ours became the strongest team on the Old Continent.

Macijauskas, who played most effectively in the Lithuanian ranks, scored 21 points (4/5 double, 2/5 trit., 7/7 penalties). The sniper scored 8 points in the fourth quarter alone.

Eurelijus Žukauskas added 18 points (7/8 dvit., 4/5 penalties) and 7 balls caught. He scored 10 points during the decisive quarter.

Šarūnas Jasikevičius, who led the team’s game, scored 10 points and assisted 9 times. Darius Songaila scored the same number of points, and 9 – Ramūnas Šiškauskas and Saulius Štombergas.

Pau Gasolis played his best game in the championship. He scored 36 points (10/16 two, 2/2 trit, 10/18 penalties), bounced 12 balls, and made 1 effective pass. In the fourth quarter alone, the athlete scored 20 points.

The center forward scored an average of 25.8 points each in the championship and was selected among the top five symbolic basketball players.

Jasikevičius, who scored 14 points and made 8.2 assists, was recognized as the most useful player in the championship. Saulius Štombergas also entered the symbolic five of the tournament.
