Lithuanian coronavirus test positive draws plans for international volleyball tournament

The Lithuanian Volleyball Federation (LTF) reports that after testing all the players before the tournament, one of the Lithuanian volleyball players was diagnosed with a coronavirus.

According to the regulations, the player and his partner were excluded from the ranks of the tournament participants, as well as the athletes who trained together.

As a result, sisters Gerda and Rugilė Grudzinskaičiai and several other players remained in the tournament, although their tests were negative.

The remaining volleyball players have joined for the other pairs, and the tournament begins on Friday. Lithuanian champion I. Dumbauskaitė will form a duo with Karole Virbickaitė.

On Thursday, LTF President Darius Čerka speaking with Delphi, he feared the potential danger of the virus.

“There are risks: tests and social distance requirements can cause all kinds of problems. We are aware that any positive test would change everything to a great extent,” said D. Čerka, who had to be tested for coronavirus along with the entire service personnel prior to competition in accordance with FIVB requirements.

Only the fourth tournament of the one-star world tour in Lithuania this year attracted volleyball players from Latvia, Estonia, France, Italy, Poland, Switzerland and Chile.

The prize fund for the three-day tournament will amount to 10,000. EUR, and its total organizational costs amount to around 30-40 thousand. euros.

Previously, European youth championships of various age groups, CEV satellites and Continental Cup competitions had been held in the Lithuanian capital.
