The judges resign voluntarily.

A. Kruopys is not only a judge of the Court of Appeal, but also president of the Division of Criminal Cases of this court, a member of the Council of Judges.

The portal delfi.lt announced that these people have the status of special witness in a case of corruption of judges.

According to the Lithuanian Court of Appeal, the judges do not comment on his resignation, but A. Kruopys related the departure “in his statement” also with the state of health.

The judges of the Lithuanian Court of Appeal are appointed and removed by the President with the approval of the Seimas.

Algimantas Valantinas, president of the Council of Magistrates, has addressed the Prosecutor’s Office with a request to provide information on judges with the status of special witness.

The fact that such judges hold positions was made clear during the Seimas Defense and National Security Committee session in May this year, said Žydrūnas Bartkus, director of the Special Investigation Service (STT).

The Special Investigations Service later reported that a total of 12 judges had been charged with various crimes. They no longer work in the courts: some have been fired, some have voluntarily resigned and some have been dismissed.

Four judges have been granted special witness status and continue to hold their positions. Two former judges also have the status of special witnesses.

A person may be questioned as a special witness if there is evidence in the record that a crime may have been committed and that the crime may have been committed by a particular person, but that information is not sufficient to give him or her suspect status.

More than 50 people have been accused of corruption in the court case. More than 110 episodes are being investigated.
