Saulius Šuminas, deputy general manager of Regitra, who visited the “Delfi Rytas” show, stressed that the news about the innovation he expects next year is not new in other countries. In Western Europe, for example, autonomous driving has been part of the driving test for some time, that is, based on navigation readings.
“Those evaluating potential drivers want the conditions for the test to be as realistic as possible so that people traveling on the roads are not challenged. If we talk about the exam, now the examiner says where to go at the closest intersection, which direction to choose, etc. And after passing the exam, the person alone has to take the streets and choose correctly ”, said the interlocutor.
According to S. Šumin, the message was announced in advance, so there is time for both driving schools and students to prepare for the changes in the exam and driver training.
Navigation – no car
As S. Schumin said, there has been a long debate about which team to choose to test future controllers. However, it was decided not to use the pre-installed in-car navigation, as well as the popular Google Maps service.
“It just came to our attention then. But we analyzed all the options. This will be a separate navigation. And that is why we are not saying that changes await us from January 1, only that it will be from next year, because we want to prepare and buy what we want ”, explained S. Šumin.
The interviewee did not respond when a change in the examination procedure could be expected, but stressed that Regitra would inform this in advance.

What errors will be critical
According to S. Šumin, there is really no need to decide that the sailing trip will last the entire exam: 45 minutes. It is estimated that it will take about 10 minutes to drive according to the navigation signs. Also, this task will wait for the exam to speed up, not at the beginning.
“If it was the entire exam, it would be too stressful. Also, the task will wait in the middle, because the person must start running, warm up. So we think that in 10 minutes the examiner will enter something into the navigation and the future driver will go from point A to point B, ”said S. Šumin.
According to him, the fundamental message, which he believes all future drivers should hear, is that even if a person deviates from the established route while driving, it will not be considered a mistake.
“Our objective is to evaluate how safe a person is driving in this section of autonomous driving, and not reach any route,” emphasized the representative of Regitra.
Thus, according to him, the appearance of a new element in the test will not affect the assessment, that is, a new type of critical error will not occur due to the need to guide navigation in the driving test.

There may be more changes
According to Schumin, driver training institutions around the world are going through a time of change, as cars are manufactured with more and more technology to help or even replace the driver in certain situations.
“All exam institutions are challenged with what to pass during the exam, how to evaluate and the like. This basic agreement is that a person has to demonstrate basic skills. That is, if, for example, there are blind spot monitoring systems in the car, that does not mean that we do not expect you to look over your shoulder. Because technology has to help us be more secure, but there is no one that generates more confusion. Furthermore, technology does not always work as it is said ”, explained the expert.
However, in the long term, there will be more and more elements of autonomous driving in driving tests, S. Šuminas was not hidden. According to him, this transformation began after abandoning the exercise in the parking lot and going out into real traffic to perform the necessary elements, such as parking the car in the parking lot after finding a suitable place.
“So eventually, it is possible that when we start driving on our own, we ask the driver to show how the windshield wipers come on, some other device is set up. And all this is just to improve the driver in the future, “said the specialist.
