A new railway branch is planned in Šiauliai

The railway infrastructure development project will improve investment conditions in the Šiauliai Free Economic Zone (ZFE) and the Šiauliai Industrial Park. This is expected to stimulate economic activity in the region and create the conditions for the creation of more high-quality, well-paid jobs for residents of the Šiauliai region, according to a statement from the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

During the execution of the project, it is planned to build 2.94 km of railway branches in the industrial zone of the city of Šiauliai, of which in the first stage – 1.97 km long branch line to the Šiauliai industrial park and in the second stage – 0.97 km branch to Šiauliai FEZ. It is also planned to install about 25 thousand. kv. m loading place with two railway branches (0.6 km each). The total area of ​​the industrial zone, where investment conditions will improve, is 172 ha.

According to the Šiauliai City Municipality and the Šiauliai FEZ, three companies planning to set up in the Šiauliai industrial park and four potential investors who analyzed investment opportunities in the Šiauliai FEZ were in need of railway infrastructure. The lack of a rail link has led some investors to choose other regions. Companies that currently operate in the industrial area also need this type of connection, so the aim is to guarantee rail connections as soon as possible.

The technical design of the first stage of the railway branch was already drawn up in October. It is planned to announce the contracting of works. The works on this stage are expected to be completed in 2021. final.
