“We are all looking forward to the new school year and we want to meet the students after a long time, when we have lost live communication. Our greatest wish is that the school year does not end quickly. Everything is reassuring, we will almost try to go back to school with your head held high, ”Andrius Navickas, president of the Lithuanian Education Workers’ Union, said during a meeting of the Union Patria faction of the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party.
According to the union representative, there is much uncertainty for teachers about how the recommendations should be implemented in practice.
“It’s nice to talk about managing flows, but how do you actually manage those flows, especially in large schools? Will security measures be provided to everyone in a timely and sufficient manner? How will the change in student flows occur during breaks? How will the catering be carried out? (…)
We look at the recommendations, they are broad enough and perhaps not well written, but a completely separate thing is their implementation. Some things are impossible to implement, “said A. Navickas.
In his opinion, the debate gained momentum too late.
“Tomorrow we start the school year, and there are municipalities that are trying to organize celebrations from different schools. (…) There are cases in which students who have returned from abroad have already come to pay off debts, and there have been cases of contagion. How is that resolved? ”Said A. Navickas.
Health fears
Teacher Jurgita Kiškienė, who participated in the meeting, said that the main concern is health.
“Especially older teachers say, ‘So we’ll go back and get in touch with a lot of people right away.’ The temperature was rejected: too many students, there are no health specialists to guarantee the inspection, ”said J. Kiškienė.
The teacher said children are only programmed to check their temperature if something feels wrong.
“It seems to me that it will be too late to measure the temperature,” said J. Kiškienė.
The teacher said she looks forward to direct work with her colleagues, but the new order creates a lot of stress.
Scary for possible legal liability
Jolanta Tučienė, director of the Vilnius kindergarten “Ąžuolas”, said that her situation is even more confusing.
“It just came to our knowledge then. There is a lot of talk about schools, and not much is said about kindergartens, we do not have common rules for preschool institutions. We are left free (…) to respond to the needs of our parents Any suggestion can adjust the rules, but what does it mean to adapt your way?
The second thing is the legal responsibility: nobody informs us about it. If we can adapt, if we have cases and complaints, we would respond in accordance with the law. All managers are very scared by this, because we don’t know what to expect if a manager is found to be incapacitated or incapacitated. (…) We are very short of rules that would be mandatory for all kindergartens, ”said J. Tučienė.
At the same time, the head of the institution said that especially in nursery groups, the contact between educators and children is very close. In his opinion, the risks faced by workers there are equivalent to those faced by doctors.
“He will not reach a small child with a mask and respirators, he may be scared. The distance to the school will not be kept. The child clings to the educator, the educator, like a mother. What kind of protective measures should be, maybe medical masks are not enough in such close contact? ”J. Tučienė asked.
The manager also spoke about the details of the speech therapist’s work.
“A speech therapist has direct contact with a child, with the tools in his head, that is, as a dentist, that connection is very close. What security measures are needed for this specialist? ”Said J. Tučienė.
Parents feel alienated
Kęstutis Mikalajūnas, a representative of the Lithuanian Parents’ Forum, said that so far parents know very little, most of them still do not know their children’s lesson times.
“The first graders were better informed because they had received an invitation to meet the teacher. Some schools are posting notices that parents will not be admitted to school, children will not be expelled from school. As adults, we make school a prison for our children. It is done in such a way that the students feel bad, ”said K. Mikalajūnas.
According to the representative of the Lithuanian Parent Forum, at a time when the requirements are not clearly defined, many schools are moving ahead.
“When the recommendations are not specific, the responsibility falls on the manager. In the absence of recommendations, take strict measures not to admit parents to school or to admit only by agreement. Then there is the feeling that our democracy has been left behind. (…) Parents care: they don’t go to school, (…) if they can’t get in, they don’t know how the child feels ”, said K. Mikalajūnas.
According to the speaker, some parents are already looking for ways to obtain certificates not to take their children to school.
“If students don’t want to go to school, then it will turn against the whole of society, if we make school a place where they don’t want to go,” said K. Mikalajūnas.
