On the social network, the minister wrote that the contract was concluded on August 27. According to him, Lithuania should reach more than 1.8 million. doses of vaccines.

A. Veryga wrote in his story: “At last! The first contract for the purchase of vaccines against the coronavirus (COVID-19) has been signed! According to him, a little more than 1.8 million doses of vaccines are planned to be supplied to Lithuania.

Such an agreement was signed yesterday, August 27, by the European Commission (EC) with the pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca. Lithuania participates in this agreement and will receive a vaccine against this insidious virus, provided that the clinical trials of this vaccine are successful and as soon as it is manufactured.

Thus, Lithuania purchases these vaccines under an agreement drawn up and signed by the EC with this company, with the participation of representatives of the Member States, according to which the Member States of the European Union (EU) buy 300 million doses of vaccinates this manufacturer, with the possibility of an additional 100 million. The purchased vaccines will be distributed to the EU Member States in proportion to their population.

The EC continues negotiations and reaches a similar agreement with other vaccine manufacturers, and contracts with Sanofi-GSK, Johnson & Johnson, CureVac and Moderna are expected to be signed in the near future.

We are a small but energetic and ambitious country. Therefore, Lithuania is taking every opportunity to control the spread of this virus and help people to protect themselves. Buying this vaccine is one of the most important factors that will help prevent it from spreading!

It is gratifying that we are among the first countries to receive the vaccine and to be able to protect the health of our people. It is clear that the European Commission’s negotiations with pharmaceutical companies, which began in the early summer, have yielded tangible results. So now it remains to be seen until it is done and reaches our country! “

Will buy with a reservation

Speaking about the purchase of the vaccine, Veryga said at a press conference on Friday: Lithuania was able to join the 1.8 million. purchase of vaccines – we have expressed that wish.

But what I want to emphasize is that the acquisition will be if the clinical trials are successfully completed and it is proven that it is an adequate, effective and safe vaccine ”, explained the minister.

Vaccines can be expected later this year

Gytis Andriulionis, Head of the State Agency for Drug Control (VVKT), recalled the prehistory of the purchase of the vaccine: “At the beginning of this year, when it came to developing and buying vaccines, they were already in the middle of negotiations with its pharmaceutical companies for the development and purchase of the vaccine.

It was then that Lithuania, along with other relatively smaller states, managed to demonstrate unity through the European Union and join that mechanism by reorganizing it. A centralized mechanism for vaccine procurement was established and launched in the European Union, with all countries participating in negotiations with all vaccine developers and manufacturers, with the participation of the EC themselves. “

According to the head of IWT, this process is already bearing fruit. Several dozen coronavirus vaccines are currently being developed around the world, most of which are still in clinical trials.

“The European Commission has established rules for companies to communicate with them. Various conditions are set for the launch of ongoing clinical trials in 2020, evidence of the potential for registration and launch of large-scale production in 2021.

Six companies were identified that met these conditions. They are currently negotiating with all of them.

We have the first pre-purchase agreement on this day. Speaking of domestic, the European Commission has agreed on vaccine prices, delivery times and preliminary registration times. According to the agreed draft, the Member States fill in certain documents and buy a certain quantity of vaccines ”, explains G. Andriulionis.

The number of vaccines that can be purchased is determined by the population of the state. According to G. Andriulionis, the first vaccines in Lithuania can be expected later this year.

“We will definitely be one of the first in the world, because the demand is greater than the possible production capacity. And large-scale production and the end of registration are expected early next year, ”promised G. Andriulionis, adding that contracts with other manufacturers will also be prepared in the near future.

The drug is a combination of two antibodies.

British and Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced on Tuesday the launch of clinical trials of a drug to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection and to treat infected people, with the first volunteers already receiving doses of the new drug.

The drug, known as AZD7442, is a combination of two antibodies and has been studied in 48 healthy people between the ages of 18 and 55.

According to the company, the study will help assess the drug’s safety and will be used both to prevent the disease and to halt its progression in already infected patients.

The results of the study are expected later this year.
