Friends of the expedition – culinary Ilona Juciūtė-Čibirkienė, member of the “ŽAS” group Gidonas Šapiro-Bilas and chef Dilanas Dampella Gamagė will embark on the eighth trip this summer, where they will visit the gastronomic and cultural pearls of Vilnius and the county of Vilnius.
Dylan, who came to Lithuania from Sri Lanka a decade ago, makes no secret that he soon loved this country and very soon began to call it home.
“To this day, I can’t imagine living anywhere else, Lithuania is my love. Of course, I missed my homeland, Sri Lanka, I haven’t been there for more than a few years, but I start a family in Lithuania. I will hide, when I first arrived, I really had thoughts of throwing everything back and going home, but with time I got used to it, made friends, met my beloved Renata, had a child and only here I imagine my life and my future ”, Dylan opens.
The man says that although Sri Lanka and Lithuania are separated by vast cultural and religious differences, he easily fell in love with and accepted local traditions and celebrations, and intends to raise his son as a Christian and as a true Lithuanian citizen.
“I am a Buddhist, Renata is a Catholic. This does not hinder our communion at all, because Buddhism is more of a philosophy of life that does not prohibit the practice of another religion. I like to visit a Catholic church in Lithuania and we are also going to baptize my son first. Of course, we are also thinking about weddings, but we are not in a hurry. My parents don’t like it very much, because in Sri Lankan culture, a baby has to be born into a married couple. But for us, as well as It is now, first I would like to take Renata to Sri Lanka, to receive a blessing from the parents who live there. We have already planned a trip to our homeland in the spring, but the pandemic that has spread around the world has also upset our plans, ”says Dylan.
Although the couple thinks very carefully about the big party, when he travels through Lithuania with the “Food Road” project, the man constantly finds various locations that are perfect for wedding celebrations.
“None of my family has visited Lithuania yet, so it would be great to invite everyone here one day. Culinary pearls of the Vilnius region
This Saturday, the “Food Road” trio will embark on their eighth journey, where they will visit the Vilnius region and the gastronomic places that are hidden here. The friends will begin the expedition by visiting the entire residence of the “Food Road” team this summer: the “Belmontas” recreation and entertainment center. The architect Ričardas Stulpinas will tell how the French water mill built in the Pavilniai Regional Park in 1838 was revived for a second life, and the director of the center Paulius Sinkevičius will invite you to a tasting of delicious dishes.
“This area has long been called Belmont, although this Italian name means ‘beautiful mountain’. There are no mountains in Lithuania, as in Italy, of course, beautiful hills explode in the Pavilniai Regional Park, but even historians themselves do not know the true meaning of this name. In those days, you could buy a cow for a bag of spices, so not everyone could afford to bake a gingerbread like the one we are used to tasting today, ”says Alvydas Griškevičius.
After becoming familiar with the secrets of making and decorating one of the attributes of the Kaziukas fair: the legendary gingerbread, Ilona, Bilas and Dilanas will not hesitate to try this craft themselves.
