South Korea’s capital has ordered the closure of all nightclubs and bars, as an increase in the number of new cases of coronavirus infection has raised fears of a second wave of the virus.
The nation was seen as a global example of curbing the virus, but on Saturday, the mayor of Seoul had to react to a new outbreak of infections in Itevo, one of the city’s busiest nightlife areas.
Nearly two dozen confirmed cases of the infection have been linked to a 29-year-old man who was diagnosed with the virus after visiting five Itevo nightclubs and bars last weekend.
Health officials warned of a possible further increase in the number of infections, with possibly 7,200 people visited at the five sites identified that weekend. people
“Neglect could lead to an outbreak of infections,” said Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, adding that the order would be valid indefinitely.
The mayor asked visitors to the identified locations to volunteer.
Of the 18 confirmed cases in South Korea on Saturday, 17 are related to the Itevon outbreak, the South Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The number of infections has increased as daily life in South Korea is slowly returning to normal, and the country’s government relaxed the safety distance rules last Wednesday.
President Moon Jae-in said Sunday that the new fireplace “helped make it clear that, even after entering the stabilization phase, similar situations could arise at any time.”
“Not finished yet”
“Everything is unfinished until it is finished,” Moon Jae-in said in a speech marking the third anniversary of his term.
“We must never weaken our protection against the epidemic by intensifying surveillance to the end,” he added.
Moon Jae-in has recently enjoyed growing public support as her government has successfully coped with the outbreak of the virus, leading to a landslide victory for her ruling party in last month’s parliamentary elections.
The country confirmed 34 new infections on Sunday. The total number of infections is 10,874.
The country’s citizens reacted to the news of the increase in cases with anger and fear.
“What a catastrophe … Is this the beginning of another country’s coronavirus outbreak?” Wrote one commenter.
Another commenter added: “It is horrible how selfish and ignorant people can be. We all have to stay home.”
