Benedict XVI, 93, suffers from a rose on his face, an infectious disease characterized by a rash on his face and severe pain, the newspaper reported, citing former Pope biographer Peter Seewald.

“According to Seewald, Pope Emeritus is now in very poor health,” the report said.

“His thinking and memory are clear, but his voice is difficult to hear right now,” he added.

Seewald visited Benedict XV in Rome on Saturday.

“At the meeting, Pope Emeritus, despite his illness, was optimistic and said that if his forces were strengthened again, he could retake the feathers,” the newspaper said in a statement.

The former pope had gone to Germany in June to visit his sick brother, George Ratzinger.

It was his first trip from Italy since his sudden departure from the office of the Holy Father in 2013. Ratzinger died on July 1. He was 96 years old.

Pope Benedict XVI, considered a cultivator of the traditions of the Catholic Church, surprised the world by announcing his resignation from the position of Holy Father for health reasons. He became the first pontiff to resign in 600 years. Former pope Joseph Ratzinger now lives in a small Vatican monastery and avoids appearing in public. Benedict XVI was replaced by the current Pope Francis.
