The proposal was proposed to the Cabinet by the COVID-19 Steering Committee, which met on Monday, in response to the deterioration of the epidemiological situation.
At the government meeting, the situation was presented by Minister of Justice Elvinas Jankevičius, Deputy Minister of Health Aurelijus Verygas.
He said that the mandatory use of masks in certain places will be necessary from Saturday, August 1.
“The obligation to wear masks would go into effect, the situation worsens. (…) To protect the people of Lithuania, by clearly sending a signal to the companies that we will not close, we will ask the public to wear masks. We offer to wear masks in public transport, closed places of commerce, shopping centers, places of service, ”said E. Jankevičius.
With the consent of the Cabinet of Ministers, E. Jankevičius, who is currently also the Chief of Operations, will change the instruction of the Chief of Operations valid so far.
Until masks become mandatory, masks are highly recommended in indoor public areas.

Other changes
At the government meeting, the ministers also changed some aspects of life that have prevailed since the quarantine.
Justice Minister Elvinas Jankevičius suggested not allowing long-term visits by prisoners.
“Our system of correctional institutions is not affected, we adhere to strict requirements, we avoid long-term dates, we would like to keep it as long as the situation is like this,” suggested E. Jankevičius. This was agreed.
It was also decided to reduce the number of remote health services provided to the population, to provide more services in the usual way. Remote services were provided during quarantine.
To date, 2,043 cases of coronavirus have been identified in Lithuania, currently 316 people remain ill and 1,643 have recovered.
80 people died from COVID-19, and 13 people died from other causes.
